Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Future Exhibits

Just found two exhibit concept art. One for The jaguar exhibit in "Rainforest of the Americas" and another one of a new lion exhibit that I had never heard of before called "Pride of LA".

This is the link: pja - projects K-M

just press the ones that say LA zoo and you'll be able to see the pics.

The "Pride of L.A." artwork is very nice, especially with the lions looking down on zoo visitors. The Los Angeles Zoo might just have a bright future...

I had never heard of that exhibit before, so maybe the zoo is just waiting for the 20 year old lions to die before they start construction.

I wonder if that will be a bridge to a second exhibit or just a platform so the lions could see the visitors from up there. If they are using the current Lion exhibit site, I hope the zoo also builts a better giraffe exhibit.

I'm familiar with the planned lion exhibit for the los angeles zoo, but the renderings have been on that website for at least 10 years now.

oh, i didn't know that they were so old. Well, I hope they do built a new lion exhibit in the future as the current one is really bad.

does the zoo plan on getting another bull elephant when Pachyderm Forest opens?

I don't think so as Billy is already very high in the gene pool and he is not represented that well. The zoo is planning on acquiring 5-6 females, and they hope that they get the ok from the SSP to breed the elephants. I'm not sure where the elephants might come from, but they might come from Asia.

We al know how that deal always goes. They have the ok to get them from Asia and then someone doesn't agree and it throws them all off. Then there left with Billy on his own for years before they finally scratch the bottom of the pail for some other whilst Billy is past breeding age.lol

Im thinking they'll get soe from Ringling Brothjers as the place is teraming with female asian elephants, maybe even Mali,Tara and Mali's new calf would coe here from Canada plus Kirina from Rosamand Zoo for breeding?I guess we'll know in November 2009?Is the area under heavy construction because im just wondering if they'll have it ready by then

Well, I heard that the zoo wanted to keep Malayan elephants as Billy is, but it could all change if they can't acquire Malayan. The zoo is under heavy construction and I heard from the zoo director that they are planning of moving Billy to his part of the exhibit by the end of October, so they could built the second have all next year. The site of the exhibit went from being a pile of dirt to where you could see the actual exhibit in about a month. I went to the zoo today and took some pics of the construction, but it's hardly visible, I will upload them in a while.

A good thing that I saw is that the zoo has decided to keep a lot of the mature trees that were at the site, so there will be a lot of shade for the elephants.

I just posted three pics in the gallery of the construction going on for the Pachyderm Forest exhibit. The whole exhibit is due to open in Nov. of 2009.

This is more info on the new exhibits I found on one of the "Zoo Vew" magazines that the zoo sends to all of its members. This is all copied from the magazine.

Golden Monkeys of China
"The Golden Monkey exhibit will bring visitors face to gace with these rare primates, revered as a national treasures in their native China. A garden pavilion viewing shelter, accessed via a rustic bridge, will place the visitor right into the tree canopy, where the monkeys are more active."

Pachyderm Forest
"This expansive Asian elephant habitat will feature waterfalls for washing and playing, waterholes for bathing, a variety of natural surfaces for walking and standing, and natural topographic and planted environments to stimulate exploration. Visitors will be able to get close enough to understand how truly imprssive elephants are."

Reptile and Insect Interpretive Center
"the new facility will provide magnificent and complementary homes to the Los Angeles Zoo's outstanding reptile collection-one of the rarest among North American zoos. Visitors will see not only their favorite reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, they'll also be able to observe staff as they manage breeding programs and facilitate the animals' daily care."

Rainforest of the Americas
One of the most celebrated biomes on Earth, the rainforest exemplifies the amazing diversity of life found on our planet, from giant river otters to dwarf caimans, tapirs to toucans. Like the rainforest itself, this multi-level exhibit will open to the visitor in layers, exploring the theme "Everything has a Home"."

I mentioned in my Cincinnati Zoo review how a keeper told me that Harry the sumatran rhino might be going to the Los Angeles Zoo...and so there might be some substantial truth to that rumor. That would be awesome for the "Pachyderm Forest" habitats.

I heard that Los Angeles wont be taking any Sumatran Rhinos at this time.

NOOOO, I was hoping that we would be getting sumatrans:(. Oh well, maybe in the future.

So, do you know what Cincy will be doing when Harry gets too old to be with Emi?

It looks like construction will begin on this in the Spring
