Melbourne Zoo Future of Melbourne Zoo 2022 (Speculation / Fantasy)

growing wild there are 3 meerkat enclosures and when i visited only 2 were inhabited also is the coati area still there are has it been replace but plese to the drawin

Yes, Melbourne are decreasing in Meerkat numbers. They haven't breed them well in a long time, so are now down to having them in just two enclosures. They also have a small group at the Royal Childrens Hospital.

Which coati area are you referring to?

Here is the area it is in growing wild
Are you going to draw up the plans stool for tree top apes are you still going to

Oh no, that is an older enclosure and is not part of Growing Wild. It used to hold coatis, and even red pandas but has sat empty for a few years now. The whole enclosure has been closed off.

Yes, I will a draw a map when I get the time.

With the baboons i have some names and genders but no birth dates

What are the names you have for the baboons?

Baboon Names

These are some names and DOB I've gathered over the years. Some of the older baboons have likely passed on and two young females (probably Gana and Quasi) were transferred to Adelaide Zoo this year.

1.0 Azizi (2010)
1.0 Jabari (2010)
0.1 Huddo (2000)
0.1 Grace (Unk)
0.1 Macey (2004)
0.1 Qetesh (2010)

0.1 Juju (2015) Huddo
1.0 Melako (2017) Macey
0.1 Quasi (2017) Qetesh
0.1 Gana (2017) Grace
0.1 Mahali (2018) Macey
1.0 Quill (2019) Qetesh
0.1 Makali (2019) Macey
0.1 Quilton (2020) Qetesh

There was also an infant born in 2019 who was nicknamed ‘Baby H’ so I’m assuming Huddo may have been the mother?

Those account for 15 of the supposed 24? baboons Melbourne have. There’s a lot of older non-breeding baboons that were born at Melbourne in the late 90’s, early 00’s.

Didn’t a baby baboon slip in just before they contricepted all the females i belive it was born around 2021
Baby h would be about 2 and a half years old

I think that would be Qetesh's infant Quilton, named after the toilet paper brand, during the panic-buying of toilet paper around the time when the COVID-19 pandemic hit Australia.

Yep, I don’t think there were any babies born last year as Melbourne are trying to slowly decrease troop numbers before breeding again.

Yes, Baby H would have been Huddo’s offspring. I don’t know whether she’s still in the troop. I hope they gave her a more original name if she is still alive and well.

Many of the older Melbourne bred ones would have passed on by now. Despite claims they can live into their late 30’s, most of the Hamadryas baboons in the region seem to live until their early 20’s. Huddo (born 2000) was noted as being the last birth of her species at Melbourne prior to the latest cohort (born 2015 onwards).

In addition to the females sent to Adelaide, Melbourne also transferred a female (Abeba) to Wildlife HQ, where she recently welcomed her first infant.

I’m a terrible drawer but here’s my roundabout drawing of the layout of the Treetop monkeys trail:

@austrlain zoo gower

upload_2022-5-20_18-53-25.jpeg

1. Cotton top tamirans
2. Black Handed Spider Monkeys
3. Black Handed Spider Monkeys
4. Empty
5. Black and White Colobus
6. White Cheeked Gibbon
7. Emperor Tamarin
8. Empty

Drawing not to scale of course.

Quilton was the last planned infant and born to Qetesh in 2020. She was originally mistaken for being a male, but was later revealed to be a female. The last infant was unplanned and was born early 2021. They haven’t announced the birth or disclosed the name, gender and parentage.
