Agreed. The public will be expecting something impressive to replace the elephants and Indian rhinoceros are the most feasible of the high profile options. Melbourne already have Western lowland gorilla and Snow leopard. Along with Giant panda and the departing elephants, these are the biggest crowd pullers, with large felids, orangutans, chimpanzees, bears and rhinoceros on the next tier.

A large chimpanzee exhibit would be an exciting addition to Melbourne. Some would be of the option they’re better suited to Werribee, but I’d prefer to see Werribee build a sizeable Hamadryas baboon exhibit and Melbourne acquire chimpanzees. Phasing out the baboons from Melbourne would free up even more space.
That would be pretty nice, but if MZ are going for chimps I’d prefer the return of the bonobo, might be just me tho

I don't think the chimp or bonobo is needed id rather a completely new species, such as a new bongo exibit, or expansion of the giraffe or zebra, with the addition of another savanna animal, but I think baboons are staying for the next 10 years

Bonobo would be an exciting addition (they’ve never been held in the region before), but would require the support of the ZAA and to my knowledge, they have no plans to establish a Bonobo population in the region.

Common chimpanzee are a more realistic option (and personal wish of mine), but with the Hamadryas baboon exhibit being only a decade old (and still in good condition), I’m assuming they’ll remain at Melbourne long term.

What do you mean they have not been held in the region before? I’m almost certain MZ held a bonobo for a very short period of time, in fact that’s how I found out about them. I remember clear as day that orangutans were held in the left exhibit, and 1 bonobo was held in the right one. I could be wrong, but I do not think so. I personally don’t think baboons will move for a while, and I don’t mind that, but it would create a lot of space for other African animals. Also, someone mentioned that giant anteaters are not able to be imported, but I saw them on the live import list, am I missing something

giant anteater are on the list so are peccarie so can't see any issue importing them. All the animals that have been mentioned on this thread are on the list

No, Melbourne Zoo have never held Bonobo. Only Western lowland gorilla, Common chimpanzee, Bornean orangutan, Sumatran orangutan and hybrid orangutan.

In the past 10 years, there was a sign next to the orangutan exhibit that said Bonobo, and I am 100% sure of that. Could it have been a mistake. We’re chimps held next to the orangutans at any point?

Chimpanzee were last held at Melbourne Zoo in 1993.
Then it has to be a Bonobo. It cannot have been siamang, so unless there is a black orangutan morph I’m unaware of and the signing was incorrect there was a Bonobo. It would have been there max 6 months. It was where the orangutans right now, and the orangutans were where the siamangs are. I am 99% sure. Also, where do you find what IRAs are in place

No Bonobos in Australia and properly never will be. :D

Sure, but there was something at Melbourne in the last few years. How often do you go to MZ? I go at least once every 2 months and there was 100% signage for the Bonobo, like, I know for a fact there was signage. Whether that was just information on the species, I’m not sure but there was something that shared an uncanny resemblance to chimps, so unless there was a chimp in 2015 odd, it was a bonobo. Since it was there for such a short period it may not have even been documented

I don’t have to live in Victoria to know what exotic animals are living in each zoo. I can say there are none and never have been any in Australia and likely never will be

I’m 100% there has never been a Bonobo held at Melbourne Zoo. If there was, it wouldn’t arrive (and leave) quietly during the night; it would be reported in the media and shouted from the rooftops by Zoos Victoria by virtue of being the first of its species in Australia. Everyone on ZooChat would have heard of it had there been one.

If you’re still not convinced, contact the zoo, but I guarantee they’ll tell you what I’ve just told you.

I didn’t mean it like that, I meant did u go to the zoo and see anything in that exhibit at any time, cos there was certainly something. Idk y u feel the need to be hostile about it

I’m aware, but i know I saw a bonobo information board at that exhibit, so I have no idea what it could have been, but it wasn’t siamang. Are you able to list the animals held in those exhibits since 2010 if you recollect them?
