Map of future renovations over the next 15+ years.

Thought some of you might find this interesting if you haven't already seen it.

Edit: This is supposed to be in the Brookfield Zoo section, no idea how it ended up in 'North America'

I see that the aardvark house is no where to be seen. Is Brookfield planning on phasing out aardvarks? It would be a shame to see the Zoo getting rid of such a unique species.

And welcome to Zoochat by the way. :)

This "15 year" plan was developed at least 5 years ago, and at this point only the Great Bear wilderness has been built. Brookfield is challenged with a huge amount of deferred maintenance on its aging infrastructure and buildings, which has consumed much of the capital money they have invested in recent years.

@Milwaukee Man: Thank you very much! You're right, the aardvarks are gone in the map - I don't think they're always stressed on the existing zoo map. It would be a big shame if they were permanently gone! I notice the Bear Wilderness plans don't match the original plan, so it has a lot of space for flexibility - there are no goats or small mammals, and the keeper I talked to last time I was there, who has been with the zoo for a long time, seem mystified there was ever intention of going beyond bears, bison and eagles.

@redukari: I used to joke as a kid that with all the construction projects, it would be nice if Brookfield or Lincoln Park could leave their zoos as-is for a few years. Now I miss the thrills of waiting for a new exhibit to come out. I notice in the last five years Brookfield has indeed spent a LOT of money and time in making small changes to existing exhibits over major renovations. It makes a lot of sense to work on taking care of the existing animal collection. I think I've heard their next priorities are the new Baboon Island and once money's available, the Packyderm House renovations, primarily aimed at making new room for the elephants, which based on the plan looks more than adequate, assuming they are principally kept in the larger enclosure.

Sometimes I do wish there were ways to preserve the antiquated zoo buildings and grottos like in the old bear habitats, but a large collection needs a lot of space and the animals' needs come first, even over my love of history.

This map is very outdated. It has been on this site for quite some time and many of the areas (i.e. Bottom right North American area) are completely wrong. The zoo has chaged their plans many times since this has been released and they are still unsure about what to do with areas they are currently working on (i.e. Baboon island). I would say this master plan is very unreliable and should no longer be used by us zoo fans as a guide for the zoo's future.

I went back to update my post and I guess it expired.

While it's not accurate detail-for-detail, I think it still gives us a pretty good idea of the zoo's basic priorities - significant changes to the northwest side to focus on African animals including elephants, outdoor yards for gorillas, a Siberian area in the top right, etc.

I've read many times how important the zoo feels it is to have a Master Plan. The last Master Plan layout I've seen is the one posted by the OP and that's dated 2006. Does anyone know when a more updated Master Plan will be made public?
