Gaur (Bos gaurus) in Captivity

I do agree that it shouldn’t take away from gaur having a captive population and do require proper breeding programs globally if possible. I did have the honor of seeing a couple gaur at the SDZ Safari park about 2 years ago and they’re wonderful creatures. Are Indian gaur the only subspecies maintained in captivity with breeding programs or are they zoomix from multiple subspecies?
I am not sure on North American gaur. I think there were rumours of a mix up with some Malayan gaur. Do not take my word for it now, it might just be that ... a rumour unsubstantiated.

Malaysian National Parks Department has indeed set up breeding centers for Malayan gaur at Sungai as well as Jenderak Breeding Center. Both these run managed herds with a few founders either way.
Would love to see hubbacki imported to the US at some point! They're the largest subspecies and both the bull and cows are a dark brown/black color. Gaur are #1 for my future White Oak-like facility if it ever happens! :)

The history of Gaurs in South Africa dates back to the early 1960s when the first individuals arrived at the Pretoria Zoo from India. Over time, the population grew, but the enclosure became overcrowded, necessitating the relocation of the animals in the early 2000s to the Lichtenburg Game Breeding Centre. The Gaurs remained at the Centre until 2012 when it ceased operations.

Presently, a small population of Gaurs can be found on a ranch in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
