Geeks Confessional

I have quite a interesting list for my geeky items. Here it goes..

I am part of my school's quiz bowl team. The rest of the team will throw down their buzzers whenever we have an animal themed speed round because they know they won't get a word in.

Cross Country, the geekiest form of athleticism. My teammates keep me sane in the fall.

I also hope to go to a college with a quidditch team.

As a fellow Cross Country runner, I am very offended;) and it's the same for me with scholars bowl. Anything animal/geography related is mine.

I can personally attest that Quidditch as a team sport is a great time!

Ok true, Battle Beast (whatever that is) does indeed fit the bill. The others are just plain old geeky in the true sense of the word. You must be the most popular kid at school. *snarf snarf* :D

Just FYI .....Battle Beasts

Hey now.......I was first chair in band, lead designer on the Robotics Team, and fastest on the CC team so I think it doesn't have to be said I was quite the ladies man. Missed out on prom king by this much.........

As Austin Powers would say "nerd alert! NERD ALERT!". :D

I work 50-60 hours per week and love it!

The Amazing Race TV show l never miss an episode.

Outside of these two and zoo's that woud take up at leat 1-2 hors per day, combined with being a zoo guide 1 day every fortnight, l don't ave time for another geek'ism.

I work on setting up and troubleshooting test environments on a variety of operating systems for a large computer company so get paid to be a geek. In addition I find it easy to pick up obsessions, motor racing (and things with 4 wheels in general) being one. I also have a mild planespotting problem after spending a few years in an office overlooking the Manchester Airport flight path that took me from "What the HECK is that thing with all the wheels!" to "I see the Antonov AN-124 is back".

Did you measure the radula too? And draw circles round them in paint & move them & see if they homed? (A level Biology field trip!)

Oh dear me no, nothing as electrifying as that experiment. I took my samples from the different type of shore and then it was back to the lab with them (these gastropods died in the name of science I am afraid to say). Once back at the lab they where put into ovens to dry out at a low temperature, so a dry body mass could be weighed. I must come clean at this point the aroma of warming shellfish and being a student who only had money for beer and nothing else, it got the better of me and I tried a few samples, from both the sheltered and exposed shore specimens (no bias with me!). Once dried the dry body matters were weighed. I cannot remember what the results where (that probably means I made them up!), but I can conclude that the addition of a little garlic, butter and parsley would enhance the taste of Patella vulgata from both sheltered shores and exposed shores.

My first love has and always will be zoos, but I've been a geek in several different fields.

I was a stamp collecting geek when I was about 9 or 10 and I used to know all about them and spent all my money on albums and stamps. This listed until I discovered football, and I am still a Stoke City geek, even though I've not seen them play since 1986.

My dad was heavily involved with model engineering in all its forms, so I became a train geek at an early age. He did not like diesel and electric locomotives but I'm not old enough to remember steam traction in everyday use, so my loyalties lie with the trains of the late 70s and 1980s.

I once spent part of a visit to the Welsh Mountain Zoo photographing class 37 diesels on the north Wales main line. An excellent view of the line can be obtained somewhere near the chimpanzees; and that leads me to admitting to being a photography geek, in the mid 1970s I even did my own processing and enlarging.

I used to like to read horror and science fiction books, mainly Stephen King, I got bored about ten years ago. I still enjoy watching the old black and white sci-fi films.

I always preferred Star Trek to Star Wars and I've liked Doctor Who since it was first broadcast in 1963. I think the original series was better than the current series, but that is what I grew up with.

My newest attack of geekiness is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I saw someone on Mastermind choose the programme for her special subject and I was very displeased when she got two questions wrong. And she called herself an expert.

I spent one entire band camp researching in the library. That tells you all you need to know about my nerd credentials.

After my earlier confessions, I think some of you might enjoy seeing this:

I forgot to mention another quirk of mine: following the weather!

I have a few weather apps on my phone, which I regularly check, and I always have weather and radar (which indicates rain on the way) websites open at all times on my browser. My wife and coworkers know that I am the guy to ask "what's the temperature now?" (I check the local temperature once an hour) or "will it rain?". I also have a mini weather station in my front yard that records temperature and rainfall. :D After a big storm, my neighbours have been know to take a look to see how many millimetres of rain fell.

In winter (it's always winter somewhere in the world) I check the snow reports of major resorts every day - even though I will probably never visit and can't ski! So, I can tell you the snow depths/weather for resorts ranging from NZ's Mount (S)Hutt to USA's Aspen to Australia's Thredbo.

there's a difference between geeky and psychotically obsessive nanoboy
