Chester Zoo Gemsbok programme

If they do go out of them it will be for a much rarer species and I for one I`m very much in favour of that.

I agree there. However, I cannot think of a more endangered member of the Hippotraginae that would fit the bill. I do think though that beisa or fringe-eared oryx would suit the entire Tsavo theme alot better (and certainly beisa would be a good candidate as the entire Somali-Ethiopian biome is under threat .... due to insecurity/political instability).

I would like to see Chester receive beisa oryx, i think it would be a species that would be more geographically suited to the Tsavo theme as KB quite rightly says, and it would be the only specimen/s in the UK.

That and the fact that Chester was the last U.K collection to keep Beisa Oryx.

I thought that the Rhino area was the tsavo area. If all the paddocks are part of the tsavo area then the przwalski's horse and wallabies are a bit out of place!

the wallabies have been replaced by the Lechwe now and it can't be long before the Przewalski Horses are moved from their current location

It will eventually be the whole of the paddock area that will have the Tsavo theme.

To another zoo? I have a soft spot for the Przewalski horses that goes back to childhood picnic lunches on one of the benches overlooking their paddock.

I used to eat my sandwiches in the same spot.

Nope, as zoogiraffe observed the Przewalskis feature in the Chester Zoo collection plan and will be relocated to part of the zoo that is more in tune with their zoo-geographical distribution. Only, when they have been relocated to that paddock ..., will the new exhibit for African hunting dogs come up in the Tsavo area.

No they are leaving the collection but at the moment nowhere has been found that I know of!

I was always quite proud of the Przewalski horses, which although still critically endangered, were even rarer when I first started eating my sandwiches in front of their paddock full of poo (strange choice, I know).

Given the amount of land the zoo has but isn't using, it's a shame this important species couldn't be moved to a new paddock somewhere.

I was somewhat astray, I suppose. It seems the Przewalskis are leaving the collection. I assume that the Bactrian camels will eventually go elsewhere too ... Whether Mongolia or western China/Tibet is in the Masterplan I do not know precisely (but I think not ...).

I just hope it will allow Chester Zoo to develop a Central Asian theme with onagers, goitred gazelles and Bactrian wapitis (merely a suggestion)!?

The central area of the zoo (currently Onagers/Camels, Cheetahs and Asian Plains (deer, Blackbuck, Indian Rhino) has been shown as 'Asian Steppe' on all the 'masterplan'-type maps I've come across.
