General Import Discussion

At the end of the day I believe it mostly comes down to who is the Director at the time one good example was the late great John Kelly of Taronga zoo under his leadership we saw a whole Gorilla troop of ten imported from Holland and a large group of wild caught Black rhinos imported from Africa. Unlike the short sightedness of the Thai elephant import of cramping them up in a city zoo at great cost only to relocate them again at cost to Dubbo to give then the room they needed in the first place.

Monarto's Director that retired, whose name escapes me at the moment. She is/ was also a fantastic director to developing the zoo. She had. good mix of developing the human amenities the zoo needed but balanced out by new species, new exhibits and growth in the overall species and holdings.

At this rate , I wouldn’t be surprised if Taronga is gonna phase out every single exotic species and be left with Australian natives , domestics and free ranging bush turkeys and water dragons .

They will always have lion, tiger a monkey species, giraffe, zebra and seal/sea lions. But that will be it. Thats if they keep on the current trajectory. It's more like a mall with some gardens and animal exhibits.

I'm sure you mean Elaine Bensted who was CEO of Zoos SA from 2012 up until quite recently: Zoos SA says a fond farewell and a warm welcome - Zoos SA

Elaine Bensted. She will surely be remembered as one of the region’s greatest directors. She brought elephants to Monarto and oversaw the Wild Africa precinct and numerous other developments.

It could be argued Monarto is the region’s best open range zoo at this point; and if not, is certainly on track to achieving that status.

Elaine was a great asset to zoos South Australia and certainly had a postive impact there I can only see Monarto going from strength to strength currently
