Geoffrey Vevers

is he related to Gwynne Vevers at all or just a coincidence?

He was indeed Gwynne's father. I am Geoff's niece (by marriage) and I will research the dates. Watch this space.

HI All,

Does anyone know the dates when Geoffrey Vevers was Superintendent of London Zoo?

Cheers,

Andy

Dr. Geoffrey M. Vevers was appointed Superintendent on 15th March 1923. (Reference: ”Centenary History of the Zoological Society of London” (P. Chalmers Mitchell; 1929))

According to the ZSL Annual Report for 1942:-

Dr. Geoffrey Vevers was awarded the Zoological Society’s silver medal in 1942 “for his services to the Society as Superintendent over a period of twenty years at Regent’s Park and the valuable part he played in the formation and development of Whipsnade Zoological Park."

According to the ZSL Annual Report for 1948 he retired due to ill health in December 1948.

He gave Gerald Durrell a job at Whipsnade - see "Beasts in My Belfry". Durrell described him as being "a civilised and kindly man".
