Has anyone been to this German collection recently?

I have been leafing through some of my guidebook collection and my eye was caught by a photograph on the cover of an Opel Zoo guidebook of some white zebras.

The guidebook is undated but I would suggest is 1990s. The photograph on the cover is repeated inside the booklet and shows two normally-coloured, adult Grant's-type zebras, two adult white zebras (well, white with feint grey stripes) and a baby white one.

I wondered if anyone knows if the zoo still keeps these strange zebras and what their history is.

Also, are there still dingos there?

I have never been to Opel Zoo in Kronberg, but maybe I can help.

I have heard about these strange white zebras bred there, but they are not in their collection anymore. The last died 10-15? years ago. The first specimen was imported from eastern Africa together with "normal" ones.

They do not have any dingos now, but there are still some interesting animals as a pair of brown hyenas, euro-kangaroos or a breeding group of mountain reedbuck.

Do they still have the Persian(Mesopotamian)Fallow Deer? At one time I believe they only had hybrid stock but not sure of the situation now...
 
I visited the zoo in 2006. It at the time was under going some major building work for a savanah area. It was a nice collection with just a couple of bad exhibits. I'll upload soem photos to my gallery!:)
 
@Pardoxurus. The Zoos has imported the white zebra mare from Kenia in 1958. She was coupled with a normal stallion, but all foals of this pair were normal. The fisrt white fwas born first until they have bred with the white mare and her first son. Its the same story as like as the white tigers story. The foals did not live really long, just a couple of years. They were often ill. The last of the white zebras died in 1992. I have seen them several times, because I lived in the area, but I have only two pictures of them.

Unfortunately the zoo had to stop with the dingos, because they were to loud and the (rich)neighbours couldn't sleep in the night, so the zoo had to give them away.
 
@Pertinax- Yes, they still keep and breed Dama dama mesopotamica. As far as I know, the hybrid group was phased out.

The Opel Zoo has been the mainstay of D. mesopotamica breeding and the fact that all offspring in western captive collections derives from Opel Zoo individuals is testament to their record.

In the early 1970's indeed several years of hybridisation with a male D. dama occurred, but as soon as a new D. mesopotamica male was received from Iran this practice was discontinued and the hybrids were "phased out" or euthanised.

Unfortunately, cooperation with the Iranian authorities has not been at its best and only occasionally have foreigners been allowed to enter the country and study the D. mesopotamica in the 2 wildife refuges where wild D. mesopotamica occured and the various locations across Iran where D. mesopotamica from the captive-breeding herd at Dasht e Naz were distributed to. They do have quite an extensive reintroduction programme, but not all projects have been as equally well monitored as could have been.

I can only hope that cooperation will improve and that likewise with the Persian onager and Asiatic cheetah, that zoos can make a meaningful contribution to wildlife conservation inside Iran and exchanges of personnel and rare wildlife can take place.
 
The Opel-Zoo has now presented his plans of a new elephant house with an enlarged outdoor exhibit to the public ! It is time, because the house was build in 1958 and the three females have only 75 square meters inside.

The new house will have two indoor exhibits, one for the females, 5000 sm, and one for the male, 200sm. Bothz exhibits will get completly sand ground and the roof is completly glass, so the elephants will have much daylight in wintertimes. Four protected contact walls are planned and four seperated stalls.

The vistors can watch the elephants from two diffrent stages.

The outdoor exhibit, which is now with 4000 sm the third largets elephante xhibit in germany ( in truth, it is the laregst, becuas ethe zoo ha sonly three elephant in it. Cologne and Hagenbeck have larger exhibits, but many more elephants in them ) will be enlarged to 5500 sm, it will get more structure with rocks, tress, plant islands and an artificial Baobab tree, like that one in the Africa Savannah. It is planned, to keep the elephants in summer outdoors in the night also.

The zoo is collecting money, they need 13 Million Euros for it. They want to begun the construction in 20110, they hope to open it during 2011. Three new elephants will arrive in 2011, a 2006 born male from Wuppertal Zoo, and two young females from Berlin Animal park.

It sounds very good and I'm looking forward this new exhibit. In a few years, the Opel-Zoo will be much better than Frankfurt Zoo, altough they don't have penguins, apes,big cats or pinnipeds, but they will get tigers and cheetahs in a few years. The Zoo has had 670.000 visitors last year.
 
Within two weeks, the zoo has lost the african elphant cow"Wankie", death cause still unknown, and now"Tana", the 54 years old female hippo-she was the oldest hippo in europe.
 
The last hippo, the male"Max"will move to Hannover in the next couple of month-so the era of hippos at Kronberg ends for a while.Also Frankfurt will send his lone female to another zoo, so within a short time, germany looses two keepers of common hippos, but both of them will keep them again in the near future. Kronberg plans to bring in black footed penguins, but its not decided yet.

Any idea where Frankfurt will send its hippo to?

Will the house than be renovated fully for the rhinos?
 
To answer your first question-not yet.The zoo hasn't published the information at this time.

And yes,the present Rhino-Hippo House at Frankfurt will be used only for rhinos, it is impossible to renovate it for hippos, but also the rhinos will move out in the next 10-15 Years to the new, planned african savannah,including a new hippo house.After this has happend, the rhino house will be a new home for okapis.But, there is no connection between the rhino stall and the hippo pool and stalls,so maybe they will keep another, small species in it, who knows ? I would try Natal Red Duikers ) together with the rhino female.

The hippo"house", you can't name it really a house, will be demolished-I could imagine, tehy will use the space for the penguin exhibit.The new hippo house will be build opposite at the present gibbon enclosure.But the zoo has not the money for that project now.
 
A complete herd of Forest reindeers arrived at the Opel Zoo. It's an all-male group and from this bachelor-group later animals will be send to zoos in need of a breeding-male.
 
The most interesting news remains the arrival of 4 Buchara deer. (they will have a far (and fair) better chance of creating a new breeder / holder than in way off and out wet-wild Scotland ...)

They haven't actually lost any more at HWP in Scotland since the initial disaster when several females appeared to be lost. The group has slowly grown with a calf a year from the single remaining female- though sadly I think they have all been males, but I believe at least one more female has now been added. In which case their group would stand at something like 4.2( or even 5.2).

Fair enough, but I still feel the conditions in HWP are not salubrious for Buchara deer from dry cold non humid desert-steppe areas. That was more or less my point.

Aside, they did lose an unacceptably high number of animals .. (although I applaud the determination and self-acclaimed "love" of senior staff in bringing in this species).
