Your German Zoo World

Zoo Praha Indonesian Rainforest

So lets start with the Review of Zoo Praha.
I visited this famous European Zoo on 22 Oktober 2018.
I was on a School Trip to Praha and on a Sunny nice Monday Morning we arrived at the Zoo. At the Zoo we took an Look on the Zoo Map.
At the Zoo we decided to go to the upper Part oft the Zoo First and so the First Animal Attraction was a little Pit Enclosure right before the Entrance of the Indonesian Rainforest Hall. In the Pit live some North American Tree Porcupines ( Erethizon dorsatum). But as we didnt saw Them we moved on to the interesting looking Indonesian Rainforest Hall. As we entered the Indonesian Rainforest we First saw a large Freshwater Aquarium with several South East Asian Fish and Turtles including Boesemanns Rainbowfish ( Melanotaenia boesemani ).

Zoo Praha Indonesian Rainforest Part 2

Next to the Freshwater Tank was a large Terrarium Tank that is Home to several Adult Komodo Dragons ( Varanus komodoensis ). Its my First Time to See These ernormus Lizzards, and yes ive been to Leipzig but theirs was a nowsho. Then we saw the cool looking Island for Pig Tailed Maqaques ( Macaca nemestrina ). In the other Side of the Maqaque Enclosure was a similar Enclosure for Sumatran Orang Utans ( Pongo abelii ).

Zoo Praha Indonesian Rainforest Part 3

Then we saw another smaller Enclosure for some Palawan Porcupine ( Hystrix pumila ). The Interesting Thing on this Enclosure was that there we're some Coocroaches in the Exhibit. I think they we're for Live Feeding, but i dont know exactly. Next we encounterd the Nocturnal Part of the Rainforest. There we're some Free flying Fruitbats in the Nocturnal Part too. I saw smaller Exhibits for:

Brush Tailed Bettong ( Bettongia penicillata )
Javan Ferret Badger ( Melogale orientalis )
Brush-tailed Possum ( Trichesurus vulpecula )

and there we're some other Species of small Mammals aswell.

Javan Ferret Badger ( Melogale orientalis )

They haven't held Ferret-badger in many years, and when they did it was not that species - I suspect you are getting confused and mean Philippine Palm Civet.

Brush-tailed Possum ( Trichesurus vulpecula )

This is also an error, although I am less sure which species you mean.

Zoo Praha Polar Bears and Lorikeets

As we came Out of the Nocturnal Part of the Rainforest Hall we have Seen other Enclosures but i dont remember what was in Them. Then we exited the Rainforest Hall and i was already verry impressed by this Zoo.
Next up was the Bear Grotto Like Polar Bear Enclosure. It contained a Group of

Polar Bear ( Ursus maritimus ).

I have to say that the Polar Bear Enclosure is one of the very few Enclosures that should be rebuild, and so i find good that Praha is planning a new Complex for Them. Then we decided to View some of the Parakeet and Lorikeet Aviarys that we're on the Long Trail from the Polar Bear Enclosure to the Plains Area. There we saw some nice colorfull Birds Like

Forstens Lorikeet ( Trichoglossus forsteni ).

We didnt go in the Big Lorikeet Aviary because our Group wants to See larger and more exiting Animals.

Zoo Praha Plains

Next to the Lorikeet Aviarys are the Exhibits for larger Ungulates Labeld on the Map as Plains. Here live several rare and criticlly endangered Hufstoock Species from around the World. The First Enclosure was for

Przewalskis Horse ( Equus ferus przewalskii )

but we didnt saw Them so we moved on to the next Enclosure for

Scimitar Horned Oryx (Oryx dammah ).

Then we saw a Enclosure for some Deer Species that i cannot remember, then we came along the Enclosure for

Bactrian Camels ( Camelus bactrianus ).

Then we saw the Most impresive Herd of

American Bison ( Bos bison bison )

i ewer saw. The Herd was massive and there was a large Male Bison with absolutely Big Horns. Next to the Bisons seems to live some Prarie Dogs but i didnt saw Them. At the next Enclosure live a smaller Group of

European Bison ( Bison bonasus ).

Next to Them we saw a Herd of

Mishmi Takin ( Budorcas taxicolor ).

Then we came across the for me Most interesting Part of the Plains, the Enclosure for

Chacoan Peccari ( Catagonus wagneri )

a really interesting and rare Species of Pig in European Zoos.

The Last Habitat of the Plains was Another Deer Paddock but we dont visited it because our Group wanted to Go to the Gray Giants, but before that we saw some interesting European Fauna.

Zoo Praha Northern Forest

Before we went to the Elephant Valley we First saw a few Animals of the northern Regions of the Globe, the northern Forests. The First Exhibit was for the largest Species of Deer the

Moose ( (Alces alces).

The next Enclosure was for

Forest Reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus ).

Then we saw the Highlight of the Forests a huge Enclosure for

Gray Wolf ( Canis lupus ).

At the Enclosure we noticed a Family with a little Dog. The Dog barks at the Wolfes and the Wolfs had now the Attention of the Dog. The Wolfs were scratching on the Viewing window Like crazy. Good for the Dog that the Wolfs were in their Enclosure and Not outside.

We dont visited the other Forest Enclosures but i personally would have loved to See the Tigers and Leopards of the Northern Forests.

Zoo Praha Elephant Valley and African Savannah

As we came from the Northern Forests we saw the Sign for Elephants in the distance. And then we saw it, the largest Enclosure for

Asian Elephant ( Elephas maximus )

ive Seen. We saw a few Elephants and we're kept going in the Elephant House. The House was nothing really Special so we moved on to the next Enclosure, which was the impresive African Savannah. As we kept going over the Big Bridge of the Exhibit we saw the ernormus Enclosure which was for several Antilopes and

Ostrich ( Struthio camelus )
Giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi
).

I think this was one of the best Enclosures of Zoo Praha. Next to the large Giraffes we saw the Enclosure for

Slender Tailed Meerkat ( Suricata suricatta ).

Next to the Meerkats was the Entrance to the Giraffe House, a House with Not only Giraffes but also Manny other smaller african Animals. First the Indoor Giraffe Enclosure was looking Like an african House and even If i Not saw Them a Sign lists several smaller Birds living with the Giraffes. Then there was a little Tank for some Desert Locust, and then the Highlight of the Giraffe House was a Mixed Species Habitat for

Kirks Dik Dik ( Madoqua kirkii )
Aardvaark ( Orycteropus afer )

this two Animal Species were the First of their Kind ive ever saw. I have to say this Enclosures were cool and interesting in the Same Way but i prever the African Savannah over the Elephant Valley.

Zoo Praha Africa and the African Nocturnal House

As we came Back from the impresive African Savannah we Walked towards the other parts of Zoo Prahas interesting African Section. First we saw some Antilope Paddocks for some interesting Species Like

Eastern Bongo ( Tragelaphus eurycerus )
Sable Antilope ( Hippotragus niger ).

Next to the Antilopes was the Hippo House, but we didnt visited it because it was currently closed, which sucks but anyways lets move on to the next cool Enclosure. Then we came across the African Nocturnal House. This was a large Building dedicated to smaller African Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians and Intervertebrates. The First Exhibit in the Building was for an rather rare African Primate the

Northern Talapoin Monkey ( Miopithecus ogouensis ).

There were many other Animals and Enclosures in this Building so i ceep it short and name the Animal Species that i can remember.

Assasin Bug
Praying Mantis
Cricket
Madagascar Giant Hissing Coocroach ( Gromphadorhina portentosa )
Toad
Rufous Egg Eating Snake
Pancace Tortoise ( Malacochersus tornieri )
Rainbow Skink ( Lampropholis delicata )
Springhare ( Pedetes capensis )
Dwarf Mongoose ( Helogale parvula )
African Bat eared Fox ( Otocyon megalotis )
Honey Badger/Ratel ( Mellivora capensis
).

I have to say this is one of the best Nocturnal Houses ive ever Seen. Next to the African Nocturnal House was a Outdoor Area for some of the above mentioned Species but there were also some Enclosures for Tortoises and

African Ground Squirrel ( Xerus inauris ).

In this Area we saw a

Blue Indian Peafowl ( Pavo cristatus )

These Birds can be found living freely across the whole Zoo Praha.
I think the African Nocturnal House was very cool and i have Seen some Species that ive never Seen before.

Sorry that Takes so Long but Here it comes

South American Carnivores and Australia

From the Nocturnal House we came to the Area for south American Carnivores. There are a few small Enclosures and cages for some smaller Mammals of South America. First we came to a small and boring looking Cage for a very active mustelid Species the

Tayra ( Eira barbara )

Next to the tayra we came to a Cage for a interesting spotted Cat Species the

Margay ( Leopardus wiedii )

Then we have a Enclosure for some rare rodents the

Hutia ( Geocapromys brownii )

The Last and largest Enclosure of the Area for south American Carnivores was for a large Pack of

Bush Dog ( Speothos venaticus )

I think this is one of the few Enclosures of Zoo Praha that need a littlebitt of improvement. So for instance i think esspacialy the tayra and margay cages need more Life plants or they should built new Enclosures for them. The tayras live in a way to small Cage to ran arround in and have only a few dead trees to climb on.

Next we came to the Australian Area of the Zoo. Here we found three nearrly identical midsized Enclosures.

The First one was for a small Herd of

Red Giant Kangaroo ( macropus Rufus )

The next two Australian Enclosures were for two large Bird Species.
In the First Bird Enclosure we saw a

Emu ( dromaius novaehollandiae )

The Last Australian Enclosure was the Most impresive for me, IT was a Enclosure for a pair of

Southern Cassowary ( casuarius casuarius )

I Made a few good Pictures of Them that you could See in the Zoo Praha gallery. And now my thoughts of the Australian Enclosures.
They were pretty cool but nothing really special that you couldnt See in other Zoos, and the Cassowary was my First one of this Species i ever saw so this was a remarkable Animal for me. But aside from the cassowarys i think they could have some more Special Australian Animals there Like Tree Kangaroos, Koalas, dingos, echidnas or Tawny frogmouths there.

Next time we Take a Look on some aquatic Hunters and majestic raptors.

About small carnivores - there were plans to rebuild old "pachyderm house" in lower part of zoo into Amazonia expositions, which shall included at least some of species in upper part of zoo... however this project was postponed...
About Australia - you should return to Prague I think, for echidnas and tasmanian devils. Also, vombats should be coming (but I do not know when). Koalas aren´t likely however, as well as tree kangaroos, at least in closes future, dtto dingos (however, are these canines really that special?)
