The Bald Eagle is yet another Zoo Animal which is managed different in european and north american Zoos, while north american Zoos mostly keep rescued Birds with a permanent wing injury the european Zoos mostly keep fully flighted Individuals which are often used for Birds of Prey shows. I have seen the national Bird of the united states at 2 Zoos. Bad Mergentheim Wildlife Park keeps them of show and you can only see the Eagle during the Zoos feeding presentation where they are sometimes rotated with a Stellers sea Eagle. At Bad Mergentheim the Bald Eagle can be seen catching his Food from a little Pond with a panoramic View which is situated behind the Zoos European pond Turtle Enclosure. Tripsdrill Wildlife keeps several Individuals of the Bald Eagle both in the Zoos Bird of Prey section where they are also used for the Zoos Bird of Prey show and in a spacious and naturalistic forested Aviary near the Zoos Brown Bear enclosure. Sadly the Birds used for the Bird of Prey show are leashed most of the Time when they are not used for the Show but they also get their daily dosis of free flight during the Bird of Prey Show. The Bald Eagle is a impressive Zoo Bird and also very popular even with standard Zoo Visitors which makes him to one of the most popular Eagle species in Zoos.
Sadly many north american Species are rare in Zoos and iam very glad i stil got to see the last elderly Mountain Goat at Wilhelma Zoo which sadly passed away in 2021. Wilhelma kept the Goat in a nice hilly Enclosure which sits right next to the Zoos Ibex Enclosure on a steep slope. Currently the former Rocky mountain Goat Enclosure is used as a extension Enclosure for the Zoos breeding herd of Markohr. The Rocky mountain Goat sadly gets more and more rare in Zoos, i hope to see them in more Zoos as they are a fascinating Species and with their white colouration they could also be popular with Zoo Visitors.
Zootierliste is clearly not following the accepted taxonomy then. Rather disappointing considering the Cat Classification Taskforce of the IUNC's Cat Specialist Group recognized that the cougar only has two valid subspecies in 2017.

Photo made by @German Zoo World Mexican west coast Rattlesnake at Wilhelma Zoo
Seen at how many Zoos/Aquariums: 5 Seen Breeds/Species: Mexican west coast Rattlesnake, Southwestern speckled Rattlesnake, Western diamondback Rattlesnake, Black tailed timber Rattlesnake, Uracoan Rattlesnake
Venemous Snakes are sadly rarely kept in Zoos and so i am very glad to have seen 5 different Species of Rattlesnake. Wilhelma Zoo keeps a Mexican west coast Rattlesnake in the Zoos Aquarium/Terrarium building arid zone. The Rattlesnake at Wilhelma is a very impressive Individual and she has to be one of the largest venemous Snakes i have ever seen and she was kept in a naturalistic desert Terrarium. Reptile Zoo Uhldingen keeps the much smaller Southwestern speckled Rattlesnake in another naturalistic desert Terrarium. Uhldingen even had a second species of Rattlesnake during my Visit in 2019 and this was the most common Rattlesnake in Zoos which is the Western diamondback Rattlesnake and they were also kept in a desert Terrarium. Acording to Zootierliste they are sadly not kept anymore at Uhldingen which means they were either phased out or they have passed away. The Western diamondback is also kept at Ulm Zoo where they are of course kept in the Zoos Reptile section but sadly they were not seen and they were also not signed anymore on my last Visit in 2024. Ulm keeps or has also kept them in a simple desert Terrarium. At Reptile Zoo Oberammergau they keep the rare Black tailed timber Rattlesnake which is kept in a simple forest themed Terrarium and i remember the Snake hiding camouflaged between the Leafs and you had to look closly to find the Rattlesnake. Hellabrunn Zoo Munich keeps the beautifull spotted pattern Uracoan Rattlesnake which is of course kept in yet another naturalistic desert Terrarium in the Zoos Venemous Snake House which is actually the Foyer fir the Zoos underground Aquarium House. Rattlesnakes are very impressive and even when they do not move arround much they are very popular with Zoo Visitors and i think more Zoos should start to keep venemous Snakes again but sadly they are getting more and more rare in Zoos and i am happy every Time i come across venemous Snakes in a Zoo.
Photo made by @German Zoo World Black tailed prairie Dogs at Bodenseezoo Reuthemühle
Seen at how many Zoos/Aquariums: 4
Prairie Dogs are very popular both by Zoos and Zoo Visitors and i have seen them at 4 Zoos. Leipzig Zoo was previously home to a huge colony that was kept in one of the former Carnivore enclosures near the Entrance to Gondwanaland. The Zoo send them away in 2014 but they already got some again in 2015 but they were kept in a much smaller and more simple Enclosure until they were either phased out or passed away in 2020. Hagenbeck Zoo Hamburg keeps them in the already mentioned Enclosure together with North american tree Porcupine. At Heidelberg Zoo they are kept in a simple glass fronted Enclosure with sand substrate and i remember some active and playfull Prairie Dogs from my last Visit. At Bodenseezoo Reuthemühle they keep a colony in a simple yet also spacious Enclosure which is only a fenced in Meadow and you could see the natural dug Burrows which was interesting to see. Prairie Dogs are small, social and active Zoo Animals which makes them common in Zoos.
Cuckoos are rarely seen in Zoos and the Roadrunner is only the second Species of Cuckoo i have personally seen in a Zoo. Wilhelma Zoo keeps a pair inside a naturalistic desert themed Aviary at the Zoos small Mammal and Bird House. I personally think the Aviary should be larger as the Roadrunner is a very active Species but other than that they are kept in a good Aviary. During most of my Visits the Roadrunners where active running and hopping arround their Aviary. Integrated in to the Aviary are two small Terrariums with Desert blonde Tarantula and Milk Snake which are both common Prey species, creating a Predator/Prey set up as sometimes the Roadrunner sits on top of one of the Terrariums. Most Zoo Visitors know the Roadrunner from a childrens cartoon series which makes them even somewhat popular but sadly they are stil rarely kept by Zoos.
Photo made by @German Zoo World American Alligator formerly at Ulm Zoo
Seen at how many Zoos/Aquariums: 5
The American Alligator is one of the most common larger Crocodilians in Zoos, i have seen them at 5 Zoos. Tierpark Berlin kept them until the closure of the Crocodile House were they were kept in a simple Enclosure with a deep and spacious Pool, the last Individual a large Male named Eugen was send to another Zoo in 2021. Also in 2021 the last Individual at Ulm Zoo, a Male named Timo sadly passed away. He was kept in one of the simple Crocodile Enclosures of the Zoos Tropical House and currently they have connected the Enclosures and the Crocodile Enclosures are now only home to Spectacled Caiman. Currently at Leipzig Zoo they are kept of show because of the refurbishment of the Terrarium but i stil remember their old Enclosure which was stil adequate and it was naturalistic too themed like the Everglades. A quite simple Enclosure is Home to two adolescent Gators at Herpetarium Landau and they are mixed with Black Pacu, Red and Yellow footed Tortoise and the rare Geoffroys side necked Turtle. At Loro Parque they are even kept in a spacious naturalistic outdoor Enclosure which is by far the best Enclosure i have seen for the Species. You can view them through underwater viewing windows which gives you a fascinating view and they are mixed with several species of north american freshwater Fish and Slider Turtles. Gators are very popular both by Zoos and Zoo Visitors which makes them to a fascinating quite often kept Zoo Reptile.
Photo made by @German Zoo World Rio fuerte Beaded Lizard formerly at Zurich Zoo
Seen at how many Zoos/Aquariums: 5 Seen Breeds/Species: Gila Monster, Mexican beaded Lizard, Rio fuerte beaded Lizard
As one of the few venemous Lizards the Beaded Lizards are popular both by Zoos and Zoo Visitors. I have seen the Gila Monster at 3 Zoos. Ulm Zoo has kept them until a few years ago mixed together with Colorado river Toad in a simple desert Terrarium which is currently Home to Black Iguana. Reptile Zoo Uhldingen keeps the Gila Monster in a naturalistic desert Terrarium. At Wilhelma ,Zoo they are kept in the spacious Sonora Desert terrarium in the Zoos Aqua/Terrarium building arid zone which they share with Collared Lizard, Baja blue rock Lizard and Chuckwalla. According to Zootierliste Zurich Zoo no longer keeps the Rio fuerte beaded Lizard which was kept in a naturalistic desert Terrarium in the Zoos Exotarium building Terrarium section where they were kept together with Colorado river Toad. Opelzoo Kronberg also has a small Aqua/Terrarium building which includes a central Terrarium for the Mexican beaded Lizard which can also be viewed from outside the House through a Window and it is shared with Blue spiny Lizard. For some rason all the mixes with smaller Lizard species seem to work well with out any problems. Beaded Lizards are very impressive and they are also large and collourfull Reptiles which makes them common in Zoos even when they are venemous.
Photo made by @German Zoo World Collared Peccary formerly at Wilhelma Zoo
Seen at how many Zoos/Aquariums: 1
Peccarys are interesting Ungulates from the Americas of which the Collared Peccary is the most common Species in Zoos. Wilhelma Zoo has kept them on the big South american mixed Enclosure until the last Individuals sadly passed away in 2023. At Wilhelma they were mixed with Greater Rhea, Giant Anteater, Patagonian Cavie, Alpaca and Brazilian Tapir. Sadly the Peccarys are getting more and more rare in Zoos but i think a larger Group can also be very entertaining to watch even for standard Zoo Visitors.
Photo made by @German Zoo World California sea Lion at Karlsruhe Zoo
Seen at how many Zoos/Aquariums: 4
California sea Lions are one of the most popular Zoo Animals and i have stil seen them for some reason only at 4 Zoos. I had my closest experience with Sea Lions after the Sea Lion show at Jungle Park Las Aguilas which is the second but much more rarely visited larger Zoo on Tennerife. I stil have the Picture taken from my Visit with two female Sea Lions both on my right and left side and i am in the centre between them. The Enclosure at Las Aguilas was sadly only a very simple show Pool and i do not know if they have some larger of show Enclosures. Wilhelma Zoo keeps a breeding group already since 1956 in the simple Pinniped Enclosure near the Zoos Aquarium/Terrarium building and they were even previously mixed with some of the last Southern elephant Seal in a Zoo and they were kept together until the last Elephant Seal named Charly sadly passed away in 1996. Currently Wilhelma keeps a small Sea Lion breeding group including a impressive Male called Unesco. After the Zoos last Polar Bear Corinna sadly passed away in 2018 the Sea Lion Enclosure at Wilhelma got some refurbishment work and the Sea Lions lived during that Time in the former Polar Bear which seems more adequate for them than their normal Enclosure and i even remember that you could even watch them through underwater viewing windows while they were kept in the former Polar Bear enclosure. Karlsruhe Zoo keeps them in a simple fake rock mock Pinniped enclosure which is located right next to the Zoos sadly quite small Enclosure for Harbour Seal and i think it would be better for both Species to connect their Enclosures espacially for the Harbour Seal. The Sea Lion Enclosure at Karlsruhe fortunatley has quite a deep Pool with a spectacular underwater viewing area and it is fascinating to see the Sea Lions passing by the undetwater viewing window. At Nuremburg Zoo they keep two sepperate groups of Sea Lions. The first Group is kept in the Zoos famous Dolphin Lagoon which is of course shared with the Zoos pod of Bottlennose Dolphin. Both the Dolphins and the Sea Lions have a spectacular underwater viewing area in the Zoos Blue Salon which is also located right next to the Manatee underwater viewing area. Nuremburgs second group is kept in a spacious mixed Enclosure together with Harbour Seal which was already mentioned in the Harbour Seal entry. California sea Lions are often used for Shows and Keeper Talks which makes them very popular both by Zoos and Zoo Visitors as Sea Lions are quite active and playfull like on my last Visit to Wilhelma Zoo i did see a female Sea Lion playing with a pice of Bark which she pushed under Water and she was shaking it arround which was entertaining to watch.
Photo made by @German Zoo World White noased Coatis at Opelzoo Kronberg
Seen at how many Zoos/Aquariums: 1
Coatis are popular and active Zoo Animals but the White noased Coati is much more rare in Zoos than the Brown noased Coati which is unfortunatley on the Eu phase out List but many Zoos that keep the Brown noased Coati plan to replace their Brown noased Coati with the White noased Coati which is stil rather uncommon in Zoos but in the last few Years they are found in more Zoos. Opelzoo Kronberg is one of the Zoos that previously had kept Brown noased Coati but switched to the White noased Coati in 2021. Kronberg keeps the Coati in the Zoos South America section where they are kept in a open topped naturalistic Enclosure with several climbing frames. On my Visit the Coatis had Cubs which are good News for the Species as they should replace the Brown noased Coati in Zoos. Coatis are active and entertaining even for standard Zoo Visitors and i think if the White noased Coati gets more common and there are more new Zoos that keep them they are a good Replacement for the Brown noased Coati.
Canada Goose already exist in some larger Citys and their Zoos as feral Populations and so maybee i have seen more of them in Zoos but i am sometimes not sure if they are captive or feral Individuals. At Opelzoo Kronberg they are signed for the big Waterfowl Pond already mentioned in several other Entrys. I think they are a impressive Waterfowl species for Zoos but sometimes it is hard to see if the Canada Goose at a Zoo are actually Zoo Animals or if they are part of a feral Population.
LIamas are well known even by standard Zoo Visitors and even when they are domestics they are very popular at Zoos and i have seen them at 8 Zoos. Bodenseezoo Reuthemühle keeps their LIamas in a simple fenced in meadow type Ungulate Enclosure as they can be held outside most of the Year. Bad Mergentheim Wildlife Park keeps them mostly in a simple Paddock behind the Lifestock Presentation meadow but they are of course best seen during the Presentation where you can see the small Herd being used as transport Animals and the younger Individuals can just be seen running alongside the adult LIamas. At Zurich Zoo you have the rare opportunity to compare both all domestic and wild type New world Camelids Alpaca, Guanaco and Vicuna directly next to each other, which is of course also including the LIamas which are held in a simple hilly Ungulate Enclosure with a Barn. Göppingen Zoo keeps a small Herd in the simple mixed domestic ungulate Enclosure which was already mentioned in several others of my Entrys. At Wildpark Oberreith they are also kept in a simple spacious meadow Enclosure which they also share with a small Herd of Alpaca and the mix with Alpacas is a very common combination which is also found in many other Zoos. On my Visit to Leipzig Zoo they stil kept a male LIama named Horst and a male Alpaca named Harry in a simple Enclosure in the Zoos entry area, Horst was used as a Ambassador Animal for the Zoo and Harry was its standin companion. Since the Zoo phased out Alpaca in 2017 they keep a small bachelor herd of LIama in the Zoos new South American section where they are kept in a simple but also themed Enclosure. Hellabrunn Zoo Munich keeps a bachelor Herd of both Alpaca and LIama which are kept in a simple Ungulate Enclosure which also includes a Barn. LIama are also kept at Ulm Zoo and they are kept in a simple narrow but also spacious Enclosure which is shared with a flock of Greater Rhea. Ulm has previously also kept a single LIama maybee a male Individual in the Zoos mixed Domestic Enclosure which was already mentioned in several other Entrys. LIamas are popular both by Zoos and Zoo Visitors and as they come in various different colour forms and they can also be used as Ambassador Animals they are very popular even in smaller Zoos.
Photo made by @German Zoo World Andean Condor at Tripsdrill Wildlife
Seen at how many Zoos/Aquariums: 2
Since the popular Song El Condor pasa this impressive new world Vulture is also popular even with standard Zoo Visitors and i have seen them at 2 Zoos. Tripsdrill Wildlife is Home to a female Individual which is kept in a simple Aviary in the Zoos Bird of Prey section and i think sometimes she is also used for the Zoos Bird of Prey show. Nuremburg Zoo also keeps their Andean Condors in the Zoos Bird of Prey section but they are kept in a larger and more spacious Aviary than the Bird at Tripsdrill. Nuremburg is also breeding them regularly which is important as they are stil in need of new Holders. I think the Andean Condor is not only huge and impressive they are also very entertaining to look at espacially when they are kept in a Bird of Prey show.
Seen at how many Zoos/Aquariums: 10 Seen Breeds/Species: Black Iguana, Green Iguana, Rhinoceros Iguana, Jamaican Iguana, Cuban rock Iguana
Iguanas are very impressive Zoo Reptiles that are very popular in Zoos as some Species are endangered and the Zoos that keep them work with conservation programms while some Species are often kept because they got to large for their former private Keepers and they are brought to Zoos that can care fore them properly. Black Iguanas are smaller than most other neotropical Iguanas but stil i have only seen them at Ulm Zoo where they are kept in the Terrarium which was already mentioned in the Beaded Lizard Entry. The Green Iguana is of course the most common Iguana in Zoos as many Zoos keep former Pets that grew to large for their previous Owners, i have seen them at 5 Zoos. Reptile Zoo Uhldingen keeps some absolutley giant Individuals in a spacious naturalistic Terrarium. Herpetarium Landau keeps them in the cramped Enclosure already mentioned in the Snapping Turtle entry but Landau also keeps some Individuals oddly in a south east asian/oceanian Palaudarium which is sadly also very cramped as the Iguana is mixed with several larger south east asian freshwater Fishes and freshwater Turtles and i think the Palaudarium is overstocked. Reptile Zoo Oberammergau keeps a huge Individual in a simple yet adequate Terrarium which is shared with Yellow footed Tortoise. Neu Ulm Reptile Zoo has their Iguana in a both simple and spacious Terrarium which mixes them with Cane Toad aswell as both Yellow and red footed Tortoise. At Göppingen Zoo they were also previously kept in the Cotton top Tamarin and southern three banded Armadillo Enclosure but currently they are only kept in the lush planted Enclosure for Crested wood Partridge, Common Marmosett and Golden headed lion Tamarin which is located in the Zoos more or less former Primate section. The Rhinoceros Iguana is another large and impressive Iguana species that i have seen at 4 Zoos. Wilhelma Zoo has kept the last Individual until it sadly passed away in 2020 in the Zoos Aquarium/Terrarium building arid zone in what is now the current Lace Monitor Enclosure. Hellabrunn Zoo Munich also kept the Rhinoceros Iguana until 2021 when it was phased out and it was kept in the Zoos Ape/Rainforest House, since 2021 the Terrarium in which the Iguana was kept was first Home to Sudan plated Lizard until it was refurbished in to a Rainforest Enclosure for Black and rufous Sengi. Herpetarium Landau fortunatley not only consists of cramped and overstocked Enclosures as the Zoos oppen topped Rhinoceros Iguana Enclosure in the Desert Hall is not only spacious but also naturalistic. Another naturalistic Terrarium for the Rhinoceros Iguana can be found at Frankfurt Zoos Exotarium building Reptile section. Frankfurt is also home to a second Iguana species as they keep the incredible rare Jamaican Iguana which is kept there since 2023 in a spacious Terrarium which was the former Home of the Rhinoceros Iguana and the Jamaican Iguana is mixed with the also rare Haitian curlytail Lizard. Praha Zoo is one of the few Zoos that breeds the Cuban rock Iguana as i remember that i saw several younger Individuals during my Visit in 2018 and they where kept in the Zoos Feline/Reptile building. Praha keeps them in several Enclosures in the above mentioned Building and they are mixed first with Ruddy ground Dove, second with Cuban Slider, Central american green Iguana and Cuban Grassquit, third with House Finch and last but not least they are even kept in a fourth Terrarium together with Northern curlytail Lizard and Oaxacan Black Iguana. Iguanas are not only large and impressive which makes them popular for Zoo Visitors they are also often kept in Zoos because of the already above mentioned conservation and rescue Animals.
Tropical south american Birds are with their amazing colours always crowd pleasers even when the general standard Zoo Visitors often only call them Birds as they do not know their real species Names. The Sunbittern is one of these types of Birds, it is colourfull but sadly most Zoo Visitors have never heard of the Sunbittern before. At Frankfurt Zoo they are housed in a naturalistic lush planted rainforest Aviary inside of the Zoos Bird House and they share their Aviary with Brazilian Tanager. Sunbittern are fascinating Zoo Birds and i think they would be even more popular both by Zoo Visitors and Zoos if they would be kept more often in either Tropical Houses or free flight Aviarys.
Tropical Bears are sadly much more rare in Zoos than the temperate Species and so i am very glad to have seen the fascinating Andean Bear at 4 Zoos. Previously they were also kept at Nuremberg Zoo which held them until 2014 in the current Fishing Cat Enclosure which shows how you can improve an outdated Enclosure for larger Animals in to a modern Home for a smaller Species. Wilhelma Zoo keeps the only neotropical Bear species already since the opening of the Enclosures for Bears and mountain Animals which was opened in 1991. Until 2020 the Enclosure was Home to the two elderly Bears Ambrose and Peruana both of which sadly passed away. After the passing of Raschid which was the last Syrian brown Bear at Wilhelma, the Zoo made the decision to only keep the more endangered Andean Bears and so both Bear Enclosures where connected to give them more Space. In 2021 Cashu and her Daughter Suyana arrived from Frankfurt Zoo and they use the Enclosure very well as you can often see them exploring their Enclosure, climbing arround or splashing arround in the Moat. Since March of 2025 Wilhelma has plans to breed Suyana with the Male Hubärt which arrived from Austria to hopefully provide some offspring. Zurich Zoo keeps the Andean Bear in the naturalistic Sangay Enclosure where they are mixed with Brown noased Coati. A quite similar Enclosure is the Ukumari country at Frankfurt Zoo which is home to 2 large and impressive Individuals that i have seen very active on my Visit in 2024. The previous Bear enclosure at Frankfurt was a former series of badly outdated Bear Grottos that where connected with each other, filled up with natural soil and they added new climbing frames until in 2013 the first Andean Bears arrived at the Zoo. Frankfurt keeps them in a mixed Enclosure with Bush Dog. Andean Bears are active which makes them popular for Zoo Visitors and espacially when they are mixed with other smaller Carnivores and this all in a spacious and naturalistic Enclosure they can be very entertaining to watch.
