there is another large fruit-eating monitor already known from southern Luzon, namely Varanus olivaceus. The 'new' species in the article is from northern Luzon, so whether it is in fact a distinct species or only a subspecies may be open to doubt

It remains open to debate .... indeed.

Let us see, but a link to (sub-)speciation may be ... as Sierra Madres is a very remote part of north-eastern Luzon. Also, it is the only site where wild Philippine crocs have been known to survive ....
 
How many more zoological surprises remain to be discovered out there? I believe many, many more, if we don't destroy their habitat first.
