South Lakes Wild Animal Park Giant otter at South Lakes

At the moment, the stock come from 5 different animals now representing 4 different lines. Two lines have been mixed at Dortmund and two at Hamburg making it possible to form new breeding pairs from those offspring (which allready have been made). It's the next generation that will need more impulse from South America. I'm just really gutted no Dutch Zoos have shown interest to keep this species, other then a remote mention by Blijdorp...

They make an amazing exhibit if you ask me :)

A male Giant Otter has now been sourced. He is named Carlos and will come from Germany in late October or early November.

Possibly Hamburg?

Yes, Carlos was born at Hamburg and is one year old. He is not related to Tupi.

The EEP has allocated a male from Hamburg to pair with the female from Leipzig at South Lakes and is due in October. The enclosure has won an award for animal welfare recently and both animals are young and potential breeders. No giant Otters have been bred in the UK to date.
Doue La Fontaine in France imported new stock from Cali, Colombia in 2007 bred them in 2009 and 2010.

As Shorts says, this is not true: http://www.zoochat.com/38/giant-otter-cubs-159248/ :)

My appolgies, this is obviously a very recent development and congrats to Chestnut Centre . this had not filtered through to me thank you.

Well if you count the 23rd June as recent then i suppose it is recent news, but its been on here since early July, but then South Lakes aren`t the only place that make claims that aren`t 100% true just ask Chester PR department about that!!

June is recent isnt it? we are only in mid september 10 or 11 weeks ago? It wasnt south Lakes that made this statement about Giant Otter Breeding it was myself. no worries.

Alot has happened in that time.
Well thanks for clearing up who made the statement about nobody had breed Giant Otters because your post wasn`t clear as to who was stating it.But it wouldn`t be the first time that South Lakes claimed something that wasn`t true I`m old enough to remember them claiming they had the only Cuban Hutias in the UK despite the fact Colchester and some little place not to far away from South Lakes called Lakeland Wildlife Oasis also had them!

Incidentally, the UK population has over the mid season been augmented by a second individual at Chester Zoo. It was wonderful to see the pool in full working order.

A male giant otter called Carlos has arrived at the park and been introduced to the female Tupi
