Giant otters in Europe

The exhibit at the Leeuwarden AquaZoo is very spacious and well maintained/landscaped. Pretty impressive for such a small zoo.

It is! Work is currently being done at the outhouse, though. I don't know what exactly they are doing, but I heard from a volunteer that it is mainly maintenance work. After all, it is already quite an old enclosure (built in 1993) and has housed several species over the years. After some modifications to the enclosure, the giant otters eventually arrived in 2015.

Still no transfer planned so that Arni from La Palmyre is no longer alone ? I think Bonita from Yorkshire Wildlife Park could be an ideal contender, without inbreeding it seems to me.

From the zoo itself, I have not heard anything about this. Yet according to Species360, there should be two giant otters, a male and a female, currently living in La Palmyre. But which female is currently there I don't know.

That's excellent news ! I hope that no new incidents will happen in the future in this installation, Brazilia's accident was really unfortunate.

Giant otter Nima from Zoo Madrid has moved to Iberá Park in Argentina. Here she will be part of the project to reintroduce the giant otter into the wild in that country. She is already together with male Coco (from Givskud Zoo) and two previous pups of Coco. The hope is that Coco and Nima will also have pups so that they can be released into the wild as a large family group in the future.

In other news: on a German zoo forum, someone reported seeing two giant otter pups at Zoo Leipzig today. They are said to be between 6 and 8 weeks old approximately. No official announcement about this birth has yet been made by the zoo itself.

Zoo de la Palmyre has shared a video on Instagram showing two giant otters. In the comments to that post, I asked who the second giant otter is (with the help of a translation machine, as I don't speak French ;)), but I don't have an answer yet.

Three giant otters were born at Givskud Zoo today. It is the first litter for parents Rio and Parana. The enclosure is currently closed to visitors. It remains to be seen if the cubs will survive as it is their first nest and also because newborn cubs are very fragile and vulnerable.

One of the young died a few days after birth. The other two seem to be doing well. They are lively and drinking well. The parents, Rio and Parana, also seem to be doing well. It is the first litter for both of them.

At ZooParc de Beauval, giant otter female Isolda died on 16 June. She had a kidney disease that recently worsened. She was therefore examined, but died during anaesthesia. After her death, male Orinoco and their two young are left behind. The two cubs are old enough to survive without their mother.

New giant otters exhibit is pretty much ready to welcome new visitors in Chorzow/Katowice, Poland. We can expect arrivals soon. Not sure from where. Maybe one of the males from Lodz in Poland or Leipzig in Germany. Maybe a female from Zlin in Czech or Zoo Aquarium de Madrid?

Indeed, there are several options of where the animals could come from. Allwetterzoo Münster in Germany will also get giant otters in the newly opened Meranti hall very soon.

From Zoo Leipzig, 3-year-old male Arno moved to Buenos Aires Ecoparque in Argentina. He moved there with a female from Zoo Zlín (probably Dana or Jana, but that has not yet been announced) to form a new breeding pair.

On both its Facebook and Instagram Stories, Allwetterzoo Münster announced yesterday that the new giant otters have arrived. More information is not known at this time.
