Giant otters in Europe

EAZA posted on its instagram yesterday about the giant otter EEP, along with some statistics about the population:

The EEP population of giant otters was founded by 7 individuals from South America. Currently, that population consists of 74 animals in 23 zoos. The EEP is coordinated by Zoo Schwerin.

The goals of the EEP are the following:

- Reintroduction: working with Rewilding Argentina to release the species into its historic range.

- Increase population size and genetic diversity.

- Build strong, global cooperation between the regions holding the species.

On both its Facebook and Instagram Stories, Allwetterzoo Münster announced yesterday that the new giant otters have arrived. More information is not known at this time.
Meanwhile, a little more is known: two giant otters from Zoo Lodz have moved to Allwetterzoo Münster.

So they go siblings? No new breeding pair? Will this same happen to Chorzow? Like a process to learn before moving to the next step?

Apart from saying that they are two giant otters from Zoo Lodz, Münster has not yet confirmed anything. They have said they will provide more information soon. Although it seems plausible to me that they are indeed the brothers Kovid and Wirus. Whether Chorzow won't get a breeding pair as well I don't know, that's up to the EEP coordinator. New holders, as far as I know, do not have to practise keeping this species first. In recent years, for example, there have been holders who immediately got a breeding pair, but also holders who got only males or only females. I think this also depends on the animals available.

As described in the EAZA post shared earlier, the current population was formed from only a few founders. That is also why not all animals will be bred with because otherwise some bloodlines will become too much represented in the population. Besides, there would then also eventually be no room for all those youngsters. For this year, there is the luck of possibly three new holders of the species. Münster now has them and Chorzow and Cottbus may also welcome them this year.

From Zoo Leipzig, 3-year-old male Arno moved to Buenos Aires Ecoparque in Argentina. He moved there with a female from Zoo Zlín (probably Dana or Jana, but that has not yet been announced) to form a new breeding pair.

Due to a number of relocations and possible cubs that had been spotted, I had lost track of the number of giant otters at Zoo Leipzig. Also, the overview I occasionally request from Species360 did not give the number of animals I had in my own list. So I checked with Zoo Leipzig to see which giant otters they currently have.

At the moment, they have the two females Emilia and Caria, and the two males Barney and Bruno. The three males Bert, Caruso and Clemens have died in recent months for various reasons due to illness.

Three giant otters were born at Givskud Zoo today. It is the first litter for parents Rio and Parana. The enclosure is currently closed to visitors. It remains to be seen if the cubs will survive as it is their first nest and also because newborn cubs are very fragile and vulnerable.

One of the young died a few days after birth. The other two seem to be doing well. They are lively and drinking well. The parents, Rio and Parana, also seem to be doing well. It is the first litter for both of them.

Yeah. Its opened since 8th of October. It was mentioned that they are aiming January 2024 to bring the otters. Lets see how it goes.

4-year-old giant otter female Bahia will move from Parrot World to Parco Natura Viva next Thursday. She will be joined there by a young male from Zoo Zlin to form a pair. The 15-year-old female Icana will remain in Parrot World. For her, a young giant otter will arrive soon to keep her company.

On Friday 8 December, giant otter Hermine moved to Halle Zoo from Zoo de Guyane in French Guiana. Hermine was found together with three siblings in the rainforest of French Guiana in September 2022 at the age of 10 days. Searches for their parents yielded nothing, so it was decided to take them to the SOS Faune Sauvage rescue centre. Hermine's three siblings unfortunately did not make it. After she herself survived the critical phase, the coordinator of the International Studbook (ISB) was contacted. Through him, Halle Zoo was selected as a suitable location for Hermine.

Zoo Halle already housed a pair of giant otters, Anori and Tama. They have been placed behind the scenes and will leave Zoo Halle in a few weeks. They will move to Iberá National Park in Argentina for future release into the wild. Before the end of the year, a male from Zoo Budapest will come to Zoo Halle to form a pair with Hermine.

Just like last year, I have made a list of the current population to start the beginning of the year with. The list was made using updates done by the zoos themselves and some Holding Request I did at Species360 this year.

Not every zoo updates as much as the other, so some numbers in my list do not match the numbers on the Holding Requests. Therefore, I contacted those zoos, some of which have responded, but some of which have not yet. Therefore, the list is not completely up to date.

The latest Holding Requests and responses from zoos also gave me yet another new holder of giant otters than those already known :D.

As always, if you see a mistake in the list, or you know more about one of the animals, please let me know.

There are currently 73 (41,32,0) giant otters in Europe (to my knowledge).

Besides this list, this time I have also made a short overview of what, as far as I know, happened within the European population last year.

Births
To my knowledge, 4 giant otters have been born last year that are currently still alive. They are 1 male and 3 females.

Deaths
To my knowledge, 6 giant otters died last year. Some from old age, and some from health problems.

Transfers
To my knowledge, 14 giant otters were moved to other zoos/locations last year. 3 of them moved to a location outside Europe, and 1 came from outside Europe to a European zoo.

Holders
By 2023, the giant otter has gained 3 new holders in Europe. These are Allwetterzoo Münster, Tierpark Cottbus and Bioparc Fuengirola. New holders are also planned for 2024. Zoo Chorzów plans to keep giant otters and Zoo Dortmund may also see the return of the giant otter.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park's female born in 2023 is named Fia. Do South Lakes no longer hold female Tupi? Presumably she has died, however, cannot find anything to confirm this.

Thanks for the addition! I contacted South Lakes a while ago and they told me they only had Carlos left. Because of Tupi's advanced age (16 years), it is very likely that she has indeed died.

Given the fact that the Sendero del Ibera project in Argentinia is being run in conjunction with the EEP/EAZA (and to a lesser extent AZA as LA Zoo has recently sent a female there too), it would be nice to list the giant otters that go there too per annum.

I will try and set up a Rewildling Argentina thread in the general threads for the country Argentina. Till date, I think now that at least 8-10 giant otters have been sent out here in the last few years (and they have already reproduced locally).
