Giant Panda Future in America

According to this video, the pandas could be state bound as soon as next Wednesday! A surprising thing though was at the end of the video it listed Memphis alongside Atlanta and San Francisco as places that will be receiving pandas in the coming months, I'd personally be surprised to see Memphis get back into the species after the PR nightmare of last time.

When I went to Memphis (to see the pandas) a keeper said that she didn’t think that the current contract would be renewed with Ya Ya and Le Le but she confident that the zoo would be receiving new bears. That was before the death and all that. The problem is that the pandas were Memphis Zoo’s main animal, their marketing animal. THERE IS NOT A FEASIBLE ANIMAL THAT CAN REPLACE THAT! Memphis will still do everything in their power to get new bears. China knows that Ya Ya’s mother had a skin condition that caused her to look that way.
Giant panda Yaya well cared for, expert says
I just hope that the untimely death of Le Le doesn’t affect negotiations too much.

I wonder if a zoo that hasn’t had pandas in recent years could get pandas, I hope to see more in the east and one in the Midwest.

I watched the video, I will be honest, I think they just looked at the zoos that have recently hosted pandas (or still do) and named them. I feel it is more a case of sloppy reporting than new information, but I hope that I an incorrect as I would love Atlanta to stay in pandas.

Looking back through the thread - wow, a lot of the posts (mine included) have not aged well. So much has happened in panda news in less than a year - since late October last year

The situation has improved pretty remarkably -- I was open in my belief the program was drawing to an end and, if it were to continue, would be altered. I still feel that it was a reasonable conclusion based on the evidence available, and the way that most zoos seemed mum to communicate if they intended to acquire more animals or if negotiations were ongoing. I do wonder if there was a reason they were not able to state these intentions in public.

Unlike the last agreements which were largely in place pre-social media, today's agreements come with added scrutiny from these toxic and very passionate fan base.

'Toxic' panda fans in China call for keeping the bears at home
Read this article and found it fascinating, but especially the example about two young pandas 'bullying' each other, in that it showed there is more to this toxic fanbase than the nationalism that felt implied in the Memphis example -- clearly, there is something deeper involved that I had underestimated.... and of course, new proof that any fanbase or hobby can become toxic.

Probably Chinese bots or those that have been brainwashed by the CCP.

I think the zoo should get pandas from china so that we could have a new exhibit in the zoo at least the La zoo is not as bad as a place for pandas as San Fransisco is.

I sometimes feel like the trash talk of San Francisco on this site is a bit... excessive. There's a joke that goes around on the internet to the effect of "Nobody hates Star Wars as much as Star Wars fans." Sometimes, it seems like nobody hates zoos as much as zoochatters...

I think this is a very valid point. Us zoochatters also know of what a world class zoo looks like we’ve seen Omaha, San Diego, Bronx etc that when zoo doesn’t meet those standards we’re disappointed

Perhaps - but honestly it sometimes seems like folks feel like trashing places makes them sound worldly or experienced, like they have some sort of high, discerning tastes. Some of the criticisms I've heard are valid, and would probably be agreed upon by folks who work in those institutions. Some of them are actually somewhat ridiculous.
