Considering Giants of the Savanna is such an amazing habitat. I decided to make a thread devoted to it's progress!
-Helmeted Guinea fowl added to both yards
-Impala being introduced to south habitat!(Elephant savanna)
-Impala birth
-several shade structures constructed
-Elephant introductions continue
-Vegetation continues to grow!

All good news, except the shade structures, which really take away from the natural look of the exhibit.

Impala birth was 3 weeks ago today.

Over the last few weeks all of the animals in the big habitats have been making forays into the other side. Elephants in the north savanna, as well as giraffes, impala, and zebra in the south savanna.

Good idea for a thread. How ofted do you plan to update it?

Also "Vegetation continues to grow!" isn't really an update:)

Yes baby Orzo the Impala!
@KC-Vegetation continues to grow is an update, because it changes the look of the savanna! There is Ivy and shrubs growing over the fence line. It looks great!
@Jax- I will try to update everytime something signifigant happens.. E.g. Jenny successfully introduced to the foursome. which to my knowledge has not happened yet! Although I heard from a volunteer Gypsy has been with the rest of the herd!

Ostrich successfully introduced to Mamma and Stumpy! Impala are next for Mamma and stumpy. While Jenny and Gypsy are soon to be introduced to the ostrich. Complete introductions of all four elephants should be completed next spring! (Kamba and Congo are slowly being introduced to the other species because Kamba has a tendency to chase the Impala!

Very exciting developments. I may go out to see it the first week of March. Hopefully they will be regularly mixing by then.

-The North and South enclosures have been connected for several weeks now. Giving the elephants six acres to roam!
-The herd of elephants is still not entirely integrated.
-A second impala fawn was born months and months ago but this was never posted. So now there are 2.11.0 impalas in the savanna.
-The only species not get mingling with the elephants in the giraffes. The zoo is being extremly cautious about this pairing it seems.
-The male lions are/are close to sexual maturity. At one of the keeper talks I learned none of the females are on birth control. So it's just a matter of time until cubs enter the picture :D
-Acoustic recording devices are now in the observation towers, recording communication amongst the elephants.
-While another study is going on with the elephants to show how they use their enclosure and how much they are walking a day (by putting GPS/pedometers on their feet).
