Many of you know me for my population lists as I've created quite a few of those but this time around I decided to tackle a slightly different and more challenging project! I've spent the last few weeks trying to put together a list of all the holders of primate species in North America. In hindsight, I probably should've been studying for my upcoming AP Exams rather than focusing so much on this project but oh well!
It has been a pretty interesting experience/learning process though as some species that I was expecting to be very common are actually rather rare and vice versa as well, and there are also several species (in private/non-AZA zoos) that I didn't realize were present in North America at all. The amount of sketchy roadside zoos with rare primates in tiny enclosures is quite surprising!
My sources for all these listings are species lists on ZooChat, USDA inspection reports (tons of those!), zoo websites, AZA/SSP Documents, zoo social medias, and more. I spent quite some time searching through ZooChat as well... maybe a little too much. Every single time I'd work on this, I'd have 30+ tabs open at once and it would drive me crazy! Just looking at all those tabs open stressed me out... plus the 65-page long Google Doc
Anyways, as many of you are aware, USDA inspection reports are not the most accurate resources so I've tried my very best to verify all these listings but please let me know if you have any additional holders for any species or know of any other relevant information for the thread. I'm looking for all the help I can get from you guys! I think I'm missing the most information for zoos in Mexico as I wasn't able to find much information for those on ZooChat or elsewhere.
There are some listings that I was having difficulty verifying so I've included a "?" by those listings so if anybody is able to help with those, I'd appreciate it.
This will be the order and organization of the posts:
Great Apes & Gibbons
Cercopithecini
Papionini
Colobuses & Langurs
Callitrichidae & Cebidae
Aotidae, Pitheciidae & Atelidae
Lemurs
Lorises, Potto & Galagos
Some species (like night monkeys) are not correctly identified and/or are hybrids so I've lumped them together. It seems that it's a mystery with night monkeys especially as apparently most private/non-AZA zoos have no idea what species of night monkey they have. It's all quite confusing so after discussing it with a few other zoochatters, I decided to simply lump them. The only ones I have listed as a specific species of night monkey are the ones at AZA zoos or ones I had verification for.
I'd also like to note it might take me a bit to format everything and get it posted so bear with me. I hope this will be a useful resource for everyone and again please feel free to chime in with corrections and all that once I'm finished!
Note: species with 25+ holders will be put under a spoiler to keep the thread a bit more organized.
