Chester Zoo Giraffe Arrival

Giraffes.

I would think they have enough in there now .

Thorn was having a good time today chasing one of the females around.:)
 
I used to give the giraffes a cursory glance on my way to RoRA via the chimps until I saw Thorn indoors a few weeks ago, that is one magnificent animal.
Dagmar is very friendly and pretty large herself. She was chasing one of the other females (Aiofe) round inside the house last week, it was a weird slow motion chase of very large animals running round in a rather small space. Tula the baby was sensibly keeping well out of it.

Dagmar seems a good addition to the group.and lots of fun in store..:)
 
She has settled in very well by the looks of things yesterday. However the boats are now more tentative going past the Giraffes as Dagmar isn't used to them and so is very intrigued and tries to join the tours.

I think she is a lovely Giraffe and will give us all lots of pleasure watching her.she is so lively good addition to the Zoo.;)
 
Surely tehy wouldn't reach their maximum number before they start properly breeding. What would happen if all the cows were to calve?

Same here. Giraffes have never held much fascination for me, but Thorn... WOW! When he's in the pen next to the viewing section in the giraffe house, you can't help but admire him. "Magnificent" is exactly the right word!
 
Ha! I usually just give the chimps a passing glance on the way to the giraffes and okapis! :D

That's the nice thing about a general collection the scale of Chester - something for everyone to enjoy. :)

Always think Giraffe are just about THE most impressive animal species a zoo can exhibit, especially when seen close to indoors. I also like the peculiar sweet smell that all Giraffe Houses seem to contain.

I would'nt think there was anymore room inside unless they have more room out side at the back.

That was why I asked the question about capacity, because I assume that at least three more little giraffes might have to fit in there somehow
 
Currently only Dagmar and Aoife are of breeding age, Orla and Faida are too young but its not impossible. Aoife probably wont become pregnant for quite a while as Tula is so young leaving just Dagmar.

That doesn't seem to have put Thorn off trying to mate with her though. A few weeks ago we saw them chasing and doing that great mating 'dance' giraffes do with their necks.

I did think there was a nice smell when I went in on Saturday.
