Perth Zoo giraffe birth

Kelvin I'll be able to post an answer this afternoon once I look at my records for Roths giraffes in Australia. Great news to have this birth as it has been a while since Perth has bred there giraffes. Great to have a female birth. Thanks for letting us know.

Perths two eldestfemale Rothschilds, Misha and Marama came from Orana, where they were born. There father was a male called Jaffa. Armani also came from Orana and his grandmother was (is?) a sister to the Perth two. Armanis father(Harold) is also the father of his mother. So unfortunately there is a fair bit of inbreeding going on here. This is to be expected when we cannot bring in anymore giraffes.

As for Marama. Her calf was Jandamarra (this giraffe, I think, had leg problems - not sure though). He was sent to Weribee as an adult where he later died. Marama also had at least one other calf that didn't live very long.

wow! a whole lot of new info to process. very interesting though.
thanx a lot jay! :D

Does anyone on this forum have that famous picture taken a few years back of the female giraffe mother licking the head of its baby and the baby has an expression of any youngster, i believe they turned it into a poster too.
I'm sure the calf and mother were photographed at Perth zoo.

YepI have that picture on a card. They are the Perth animals. The mother was Misha, the same female that has just given birth. I'm not sure which calf it was.

There are three zoos breeding pure bred Roths in Australia and New Zealand. The Perth group, the Orana group and the Melbourne pair.

Zoo-Boy you're right, they do have a pair, though they haven't yet bred. There are also a number of males that are breeding the next generation of hybrid giraffes at Dubbo, Monarto and Auckland.
