A female giraffe has been born at WPZ:
Giraffe calf born at the Zoo | Taronga Conservation Society Australia
Giraffe calf born at the Zoo | Taronga Conservation Society Australia
She's the fourth calf in about 18 months.
That is what they said on the news and I think on the website as well. Quite an achivement I must say, but unfortunately they are hybrids. I wonder if WPZ could achieve the same result with breeding pure Rothschild's if a program is ever brought back up with new bloodlines, but I would imagine why not.
I don't think it matters that they're hybrids. Realistically, Australia is never going to be the base for a breed-and-release program for endangered giraffes, so what's the harm in having the widest genetic pool of giraffes possible?
Unami is the breding Bull. Giraffe were thought not to be of appropriate breeding age until they reach for, he was two and a half when he arrived and three cows were pregnant within twelve months.
He's done very well. The little calf is very cute but is hard to see from the front. She is spending her time in the nightyards at the moment. The lemurs are popular but I haven't had a chance to try and spot the baby yet.
