Giraffes at Marwell - what are their names?

Hi,

I am interested to know the names of the 6 giraffes currently at Marwell. We saw 4 in the Into Africa house in May this year, 3 of which were adults and the fourth the new female calf called Ruby. Are Tiya and the adult male Kismut on the African Valley and what are the names of the other adults?

Kismet is the adult breeding male. He arrived from Heythrop (?) a few years ago, he arrived from Germany originally. The 'pure-bred' females are;

Ursula- arrived from Woburn.
Ruby- born at Marwell, Ursula's calf.
Matilda- born at Marwell, pregnant.
Jade- born at Leipzig.
Nsia- born at Marwell, Matilda's calf.

Marwell also has Tiya (sp?), Kwame (Hybrid male), Isabella and Makeda. I think that is all of the pure-bred and hybrid Giraffes at Marwell.

Nsia (f) born 19/04/10 to Kismet and Matilda at Marwell
Ruby (f) born 31/01/12 to Casper and Irsulah at Marwell (Irsulah was already pregnant when she left Woburn)

The hybrid giraffes are:

Isabella (f) born 15/02/02 to Bruce and Biffa at Marwell
Makeda (f) born 2005 to Christopher and Biffa at Marwell
Christa (f) born 14/05/08 to Christopher and Matilda at Marwell
Tiye (f) born 06/06/08 to Christopher and Mary at Marwell
Kwame (m) born 06/06/09 to Kismet and Isabella at Marwell

Yes, that's true. I was also originally told by two keepers on that section that she came from Leipzig, then two weeks later the same keepers admitted separately that they had been incorrect and that she was actually from Burgers'. Each of them gave a different explanation for their confusion ... one said that another giraffe had been due to arrive from Leipzig but hadn't, and the other said that there had been a conference in Leipzig about giraffes at the same time as Jade arrived at Marwell and it was a slip of the tongue.

Sorry, i know the answer is probably on here somewhere,but a quick question which i'm sure mhale can answer. I seem to recall Christopher died, but what happened to the females, Mary & Biffa, did they also die or were they amongst those sent away? Not sure of the current set up, but hope there will be no further hybrids born.

Yes, Christopher died at Marwell in 2007. Biffa died in 2007 and Mary died in 2009, both at Marwell.

Kismet arrived from Flamingoland and not Heythrop!!!He was however kept at Heythrop before moving to Flamingoland.

Correction of Ruby's mother's name

There seems to be disagreement on this thread about the correct spelling of Ruby's mother's name - some people think it's spelled Ursula whilst others say it's spelled Irsulah. I have read on the Marwell Zoo website that it's spelled Irsula, and they should know, so I just thought I'd get that confusion sorted out.

One other thing...I wonder where the main group of giraffes is at Marwell at the moment. When I visited in the middle of May I only saw 4 giraffes in the Into Africa house (little Ruby, her mother Irsula and 2 other adults). There was no sign of all the other adults which have been listed by other people on this thread as being present now, so are all these other giraffes out on the African Valley? I know that Tiya and Kismut were on the African Valley last year and I assume they can all have the run of the Valley if they so wish, but I just wondered what the situation is now?

Yes, Marwell do spell her name Irsula but I had seen it spelt Irsulah when she was born at Woburn

I have now taken a photograph of the names and dates of birth of all the giraffes (see attached), as I didn't previously know the birthdates for Kismet and Makeda.

I visited today and Ruby, her mother and another adult female were in the bongo paddock opposite the giraffe house. The rest were in the African Valley (see attached photos from the Valley). Sometimes, you can't see the giraffes in the Valley because there is an area of it that is just out-of-sight from Cafe Graze (at the end where the gate opens into the bongo paddock, just beyond where the five of them are standing in my photo), but today they were all in view.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but what happened to

Stephanie - DOB April 1997 went to WMSP 2002 ?
Annabella - DOB December 2003

There appears not to be any record of them, are they still alive ?
Just intrigued to know

Annabella (I think) went up to West Midlands in 2007 or there about's. Along with a young male, but I don't believe she's still alive
