Giraffes in the UK

Did Aisling come from the same place?
Correct - they had the same father - Darragh born in Dublin 1995 - came to Fota 1996 - he had 16 calves between 2000 and 2004 - then he moved to Cambron and died quickly after he arrived there.

The Paignton Giraffe herd are still only using their hard stand and only two individuals are venturing a few metres into the old elephant paddock. A new bull will be introduced when the new giraffe house refurbishment has taken place.
More than a few metres judging by a picture I’ve seen today.

Fantastic, did they go to the first and/or second feeding browse pole i.e. how many metres past the end of the elephant barn? It would be really helpful if you could share your picture - thank you Rajang

One individual made it past the pond and can be seen by the fence opposite the old tapir/capybara yards.

This is absolutely wonderful news. Fingers crossed the whole herd ventures out in the coming weeks so they can start work on the house and for the health & welfare of the Giraffe. Any luck in sourcing/sharing the image? Thank you.

Just some updates from 2024

Hybrid female Makeda(born Marwell 2005) died earlier this year. I believe she had a calf this year as well that also died at/shortly after birth (however I don't know the circumstances as it was never announced publicly)

Rothschild bull Rudi who was born at Longleat in 2017 died at Folly Farm

Rothschild bull Mbonisi was born at Marwell in August but sadly died in November after succumbing to an infection.

Longleat former breeding bull Thorn died earlier this year at the age of 23

As announced in the SL thread their male Kordorfan will move to another UK collection and the 3 females will move to France(next year I'm guessing now)

0:1 Rothschild Joanna born at Paignton zoo in 2014(Yoda x Sangha) was PTS last week due to ongoing health conditions that didn't improve. This leaves 0:4

On the plus side 1:0 was born on Mother's day at Flamingo Land

Sadly Rothschild bull Tonda(Yoda x Janica) has died at Chessington.

Tonda was born at Paignton zoo in 2010, his mother still resides there.

Chessington have announced the death of Rothschild bull Karamoja.

He was born at Port Lympne in July 2006 so had just turned 19yrs.

This leaves 3:0 Kito,Oscar & Napoli. All 3 were born at Woburn

I think his mother was Amber who moved to Flamingo Land and he was conceived at Longleat(fathered by Kwaheri possibly?) could anyone confirm this?

Persumably Karamoja was just over represented or was there question marks over his mother's breeding?

His grandmother produced 10 calves at Longleat(her last calf is also 19yrs living at Cotswolds Wildlife Park)

Anyone have any information on Gilbert who was born at Noah's Ark in September 2019?
He was fathered by the current bull Kito(hybrid born at Dudley in 2014) but with the previous female(who has since died) another female(called Ella possibly?) has since arrived as a companion(from South Lakes) & 1:0 Rothschild called Ronan has arrived from Belfast in 2023 but there is no mention of Gilbert so presumably he has died. Anyone confirm this?

I believe Palle came from Copenhagen zoo and was a similar age to the ill-fated Marius who apparently YWP also offered to re-home( this ill fated story doesn't need re-covering)

Palle was actually Marius' older brother! His already being at YWP is part of the reason why Copenhagen declined to place Marius there as well, they didn't see any point in duplicating the same set of genetics at the same facility.

At least he would still be alive if they had allowed YWP to take him on.

And he would've taken up space that could've housed a more genetically valuable giraffe. Just as Copenhagen Zoo itself noted when asked about their refusal.

Yet they sent Palle to YWP does t make sense but anyhow we all know how the story ended sadly

I assume because the EAZA determined that Palle's genetics weren't over-represented in the UK, ergo, him moving to YWP would be an asset to the UK's Reticulated giraffe herd.

With Palle fulfilling that role, there was no logical reason for Marius to also be sent on to YWP. Makes plenty of sense to me. Survival of the (sub)species must always come over the survival of the individual.

Yet he's still in a non breeding single sex group.
I understand to send 2 closely related males to the same location would be a stupid idea if they were to start breeding however as we know YWP are still a holder of surplus males(much needed can I add) so Marius could have joined Palle however he didn't so sadly his story of how he died and the reasons will go down in the zoos history.
