Blackpool Zoo Giraffes to return to Blackpool Zoo!

The zoo's Facebook page stated the following on Tuesday:

"We have two new arrivals in Giraffe Heights - two more beautiful female giraffes from Fota, near Cork in Ireland. They arrived late on Friday night but have settled in very well with Ciara, Sive, Quiver and Timber. We'll give you more details about them both when their records arrive."

So they were very new on Saturday ! Seems Blackpool might be planning to hold a female only group of hybrid giraffe , though the young male born there would have to be moved in time .

That was my first thought, it was fine for the three adults and calf, but for 2 extra adult females...?

Thats blackpool lol why dont they relocateor rehome the llamas and extend the paddock would make more sense than having the largest paddock for a domesticated species.

They could also mix a species of gazelle with the giraffe which is what i think they originally planed but i doubt they would place them in the current giraffe paddock.

According to the giraffe studbook which can be found on the website of Rotterdam zoo, Blackpool will keep an all-female group of hybrid giraffes with a maximun capacity of 5 animals. The male calf will be moved to an all-male-group in time.
Fota is listed in the studbook as keeping 2.7 Rothschild`s giraffes and 0.2 hybrids, I think these are the 2 new giraffes in Blackpool so that Fota now keeps a purebred group!

Hi Yassa,

Can you provide us with directions to the full studbook?
I have only seen the studbook commentaries re the various breeding programmes and relevant subspecies, not to individual collection or even individual level.

Much obliged,

K.B.
