Colchester Zoo Giraffes

Thought I'd share with you guys some news about Colchester Zoo's Giraffes.

1.Koife, Edmund and Century will all move to Cotswold Wildlife Park

2.Lily, Isha are doing well and have taken a great interest in Koife!

3.All the giraffes at Colchester are not really 'pures' so thats why they're moving.

Any others questions welcomed :)
 
Has the new male reticulated giraffe arrived yet? Why is Century going to Cotswolds when he's a pure rothschild? :confused: I thought Cotswolds WP were just taking hybids?

I am trying to write a complete list of animals and their names etc at colchester zoo. Main animals are easy but struggling with others, mainly monkeys. any info welcome
 
How can he be? :confused: He was born at Longleat in 2006. Last calf of Jolly and Kwaheri. Jolly had at least 10 calfs in her lifetime and Kwaheri must have had about the same. Possibly even more. They would never of been allowed to have that many if neither were pure!
 
Asked about it at the zoo last week and they said Century was not a complete pure. He had a few problems with him. I'll try to ask again next week for more info on it stripes :)

I also find it very strange that Century is a Hybrid as Stripes has said he was born at Longleat one of the few collections in the U.k not to have been found to have ever held any Hybrids!

The 'reticulated' male Edmund was apparently born at Whipsnade and their group are Reticulated- so either he must be pure or the parent group(Whipsnade's) are not but I've never heard anything to suggest that before...he may be leaving because he's related to Colchester's new females, not because of purity.
 
Even the studbook list Colchester as having 1.0 Reticulated, 1.0 Rothschild, 1.0 hybrid.

So thats Edmund (Reticulated)
Century (Rothschild)
Kiofe (Hybrid)

This would have serious implications on the Longleat herd and all offspring produced there, IF century is proved hybrid.

Well if Century is a Hybrid it screws up all the collections which have not been effected already in the U.K,with the Hybrid Baringo curse,so a hope the post is wrong and that he`s pure.
 
Sorry haven't viewed this thread for a bit. Just to clarify he had a few problems doesn't mean to say he's not pure but he has either health or gene problems. I'll try to get some more info!

Please make your mind up in one post you say he`s not pure now you are saying he might,please if you are not sure of the facts don`t post until you are,because if you confirm him not to be pure you know more the Giraffe Studbook Holder!!

Agree 100%. Be careful, question, have reservation and only post a claim when you are sure and have corroborating data.

Personally - no offence - I take it with more than a pinch of salt (besides I am close to the studbook).
 
Got this info from zoo but a couple of weeks ago. I can say that century may not be 100% pure due to health problems or gene problems.

Maybe instead of PURE you could of used FIT, would of saved alot of back and forth. ;)

Because they started with a batchelor group consisting of Neo from Chester. (Died 2006/2007) Koife from Twycross and the pure Reticulated male Ed. Then Century came from Longleat in 2008. The 2 females only arrived recently and a male is due shortly to hopefully breed with them. As stated earlier in the thread the current boys will all move to Cotswolds Wildlife Park once the accommodation has been built for them.
 
Colchester has 3:2 giraffes

Century - (rumoured to be hybrid)
Koife - Hybrid Reticulated
Edmund - Pure Reticulated
Lily - Pure Reticulated
Isha - Pure Reticulated

Also a new male reticulated is due to arrive in the next few months.

All the 'old' male giraffes will be moving to Cotswolds Wildlife Park when they have built their facilities.
