Prague Zoo Praha giraffes

A female called Kasunga died in July 2009. Her daughter Sasa now lives at Bandholm Zoo in Denmark and her son Borek is still at Prague Zoo.

3/4 calfs have been born this year. All were sired by Simon. Kleopatra gave birth to a female calf in March 2009. In the same week her daughter Nora also had a female calf.
 
There are currently 14 (4.10) Rotschild´s Giraffes living at Prague Zoo.

Eliska born 6.9.1995 in Prague, parents Simon and Berta
Nikola born 28.11.1997 in Prague, parents Simon and Kleopatra, handreared
Nora born 27.1.1999 in Prague, parents Simon and Kleopatra
Diana born 6.1.2003 in Prague, parents Simon and Kleopatra
Velvet Zoe born 17.11.2007 in Prague, parents Johan and Eliska
Safira born 1.3.2009 in Prague, parents Johan and Nora
Sara born 8.3.2009 in Prague, parents Simon and Kleopatra
?? born on 30.5.2009 in Prague, parents Simon and Berta

There were 5 (2.3) calfs born this year, 3 (2.1) animals were sent out and 2 (1.1) died.
 
I would say, that maybe 5 females are in first stages of a pregnancy: Berta, Kleopatra, Eliska, Nora and Diana.

Sasa (pronounced as Sascha) was born 16.8.2006 in Prague, parents Johan and Kasunga. Accually, the name Sasa was given to her by her adoptive parents (= sponsors), her "original" name is Dagmar.

Kasunga was born 2.7.2000 in olomouc, parents Herbie and Kazi.

I´m sorry but I don´t know the details of all +60 giraffes born at Prague during last 35 years. I also don´t know the name of Johan´s parents, maybe somebody from the Dutch section could help you.

Giraffes leaving the zoo this year:
Vaclav (*28.9.2007 Simon + Berta) and Faust (*26.8.2007 Simon + Kleopatra) were sent in April to the bachelor group at Gdansk/Poland.
Hedvika (*16.8.2006 Johan + Gita) went to Lodz/Poland in July.

The year before:
Ingrid (*26.1.2007 Johan + Diana) und Sandra (*23.8.2007 Johan + Nora) went to Budapest.
Zbyna (*20.5.2006 Johan + Berta) went to Lodz, where she unfortunatelly died.
Marek (*25.4.2006 Johan + Eliska) went to Cabarceno.
Gabina (*26.1.2006 Simon + Kleopatra) went to Valencia, but I´m not sure now if really in 2008 or maybe a year earlier?

May I ask why you are so interested in Prague giraffes?
 
Wow Nicola, instead of thanking Jana for being so kind and taking the time to answer your many questions as good as she can, you are ignoring her only question and asking even more. Don`t you notice how rude you are??
 
Yassa, thanks for your support. I don´t mind, because I suppose her to be a small child.

Time will teach her that, with a little bit of politeness, she can reach much more. Because in such case, instead of "both died", my answer to her last question would be more detailed.

Probably I would mention that Gita, born 9.6.1995 in Prague to parents Simon and Vali, was a very friendly and calm giraffe. She died due to a colic on 4.4.2007. Vet diagnosed this problem and treated her with medicaments, but it was getting only worse, so it was decided to operate her. A very risky way, but her only chance. Unfortunatelly, she died in narcosis, before the respective operation even started. Her colon couldn´t withstand the pressure, too late. Gita´s daughter, Hedvika, was 7 months old then, and still partly dependent on drinking mother´s milk. But she didn´t need to be bottle-fed by the keepers. Her aunt Eliska adopted her as her own child and also other cows within the herd let her succle together with their own calves.

Probably I would mention that Simon (pronounced as Schimmon), ...
