Giza Zoo Giza Zoo News

Animal welfare issues once again. How on Earth can you as a curatorial and keeper staff allow bears to fight it out for hours. Time to intervene ...

After all the work that's been put into the zoo, something like this happens. The damned news doesn't help the situation - it certainly doesn't take a genius to figure out that female bears don't battle to the death over males. In any case it does seem odd to have 3 bears in one altercation. It would be horrid if Giza is simply covering up another atrocity.

And of course, within a year, the zoo will announce the birth of bear cubs...

How odd. This 'news' was also released (at least) about 3 years ago. 270 would make it the world's oldest tortoise. Adwaita, the Aldabran tortoise they mention, died in 2006 allegedly aged 250. I'm not sure if we'll find out which animal the original news was referring to.
the article does say "In April 2013, news about the turtle’s death circulated before it was denied by the Director General of the Giza Zoo."

I'd like to know how they arrived at an age of 270 when the tortoise has only been at the zoo since 1936. Counting on my fingers that is only a period of 79 years, leaving almost two centuries of guesswork.

Na'eema, a Patagonian sea lion got pregnant, The cheetahs have mated (Yes they now have cheetahs) and there is also a newborn olive baboon and a new larger eland exhibit (Pictures in the gallery), And there was an injured olive baboon with very deep scars on his right hind leg, but he has succesfully recovered.

What subspecies of lion do they have? And what species of giant tortoise, and gazelles do they have?
