Global Captive Orca Population

After Haida and Winnie died the whole social structure fell with Kyuquot and Keto being quite dominant males they were in charge and as Kayla didn’t really care she just kept to herself and Keet
Indeed, Haida and Winnie were really the only dominant females at San Antonio. Even Katerina to an extent, before her passing shortly before the two aforementioned females.

Kayla never really stepped up following their passings, and Unna was never really a dominant female too. Sending Keto away didn't really solve the problem, and especially after Kayla left to Orlando in 06 the only female left was Unna, who essentially let the males take charge. Hence, Takara's soon arrival to resolve these issues.

If Katerina didn’t die I feel like we would see Takara at Orlando with Trua, Sakari and MAYBE even Kamea(Since she’s born through AI) However, this might also mean that Keet and Kayla stayed at San Antonio and Katerina had a calf.

Haichang is moving forward with plans for an orca show at their original aquarium, Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park (大连老虎滩海洋公园). The site has already been selected and preliminary project concept design is already complete. No images or designs have been released yet. Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park is already home to Haichang’s killer whale temporary holding facility, which was used to hold the original four orcas before moving them in 2018 to Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park. Haichang has wanted an orca show at Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park since at least 2017.

Will be interesting to see where they intend to source the whales from.

Would they take some from shanghi?
Or possibly Chimelong?
Or even kamogawa?
These are the questions.
Its quite unlikely they would try to source them from shanghi but Chimelong could send a few as for Kamogawa they could be promised Dora’s calf when he’s older or even some sperm samples from one of the older males for a female these are what I think might be some ways to obtain orcas but what are your thoughts?

Hmmmm... interesting. Hopefully they bought the poor Wuxi or SunAsia whales. It would be nice to see them reunited with other Russian whales and get them out of the purgatory they are living in.
Hopefully it will be either of the two whales at Wuxi or SunAsia.

Doubt Kamogawa would send any as they don't really have any to send as it is atm. Same goes for Shanghai.

Chimelong on the other hand do, and could afford to send a few over. As I've previously stated, they probably will be looking to move orcas to other parks very soon if their breeding success continues.

Footage of Stella at Kobe.

God those tanks are disgustingly small. Especially the swim-with dolphin tank.

So disappointing she was moved from Port of Nagoya to here. You’d think with what we know now about cetacean welfare a brand new dolphinarium would invest into more space and enrichment for their animals: really disgusting. I don’t even see much in the way of shade. I wouldn’t be surprised if the animals end up overexposed to sunlight.
Especially when she has come from a facility (Nagoya) who did have shade implemented with their orca pools.

The swim-with dolphin tank also looks quite appalling. Looks like they've stuck a pair of dolphins into a hotel pool.

It's also disappointing to see one of Kamogawa's females hasn't joined her already. You'd hope they would've wanted to limit Stella's time alone, but I haven't seen anything regarding a move of one of Kamogawa's girls yet. Hopefully they don't leave it too long.

You do not really believe that Granvista "cares" do you ? If they had a shred of decency, they would never have done this, especially to Stella, who has lost more than anyone. Over and over and over .

Yeah earlier I played with the idea that even if it was a bit small, perhaps sending the somewhere ASAP would be best for the French whales to get out for the sake of their health but if they were destined for Suma they'd surely suffer there too. I wonder if Granvista is still interested in the French whales anymore. Perhaps Port of Nagoya would be as they would be able to pair Wikie and Earth together.

This is absolutely horrific if the French orcas go there like planned it’s going to be a total disaster not only for Granvista but for the whole world if the French orcas go; think about it 2 orcas going from a massive complex to a small, sh*tty facility. I’m not saying that France doesn’t have its problems what I’m trying to say is they need to think really if wikie and Keijo went this will affect all of the orcas since the AR activists have been so speculative saying that the orcas are going to a seapen even though the French government hasn’t said anything

This is why I have zero faith in the entire captive cetacean industry. When Marineland was planning on sending their orcas there, there’s no way they weren’t shown blueprints or other plans of these pathetically small tanks, but they wanted to go through with sending their orcas there anyways until the French government stopped them. This is why I am leaning towards the WSP as being the best option that Wikie and Keijo have; obviously the sea sanctuary model is unproven, but orcas have been maintained in sea pens before, and really anywhere bigger than that has to be better IMO. With the global captive orca industry in the state it’s in, I don’t see any other marine park willing to take them.

Bigger, is not always better. Animals in human care appreciate a clean home, abundant food and kind carers. They also care more about who they live with, than the size of their home.

The show pool at Nagoya is barely used by the orcas, because they prefer the two back pools. The dolphins live in the show pool. Port of Nagoya is a public aquarium. They do not have the benefactors that Kamogawa has. Buying Earth was an investment. During Covid, they had to have a GoFund me to feed the animals. After that, attendance improved, but they do not have the funding to buy and support two more orca. Bingo, Stella and Ran were on loan when they took them and Lynn was the incentive there.

Wiki is 23, Earth is 15. If they wanted to breed them, they could do it artificially, as both are trained for AI. They do not need to be at the same facility.

Marineland Antibes may be bigger than any Japanese facility, but those pools are pristine. Kamogawa and Nagoya have state of the art
seawater filtration systems, wave systems and cooling systems. The French and the Japanese are worlds apart when it comes to cleanliness. Antibes has had something growing in their pools since the storm that killed Valentin introduced it. I have sympathy for the French orcas, but there is something very wrong there, and bringing them to Japan could indeed be a disaster, for the Japanese orcas.

The failure of the transfer to go through has already broken up a family. Stella would NEVER have been transferred to Suma, as the French orcas were meant to go to Suma. Stella was sent there to replace them because they have advertised an orca show on opening day June 1st. (With a presentation on May 29th).

Marineland may not have been shown blueprints, but they were surely shown the amount Granvista was willing to pay for their orcas. That is all they saw. That is all they cared about.

The WSP seapen will not be available until spring of 2025. Where do Wikie and Keijo stay until then?

True, but it would allow Earth to have deeper social interactions with another whale by being able to be in physical contact with Wikie without the risk of inbreeding.

Outside of Japan, I could see Loro Parque taking them, though I know Marineland already struck that idea down in the past due to their substandard care. I wouldn’t want the whales to go there unless absolutely necessary. I highly doubt SeaWorld would want to take them considering their orcas are on phase-out though considering the two parks’ prior history maybe it could be painted as saving the whales from a bad situation (this is definitely a stretch). I’ve always found the whale sanctuary project a bit shady regarding their financial situation and lack of transparency (also their involvement with Tokitae).
