Now there's an exhibit line-up to whet the appetite! (and two mammal firsts for me in that list). And with the other sections as well this should be fantastic (assuming the list is accurate, though it seems to fit pretty well with what I've heard elsewhere).

Can't wait.

Thanks for posting!

In my book aye-ayes are special any day of the year! I really hope they get them for Gondwanaland (as well as tarsiers obviously)

I like Aye Aye's also, but there two holders of them in germany and few more in europe, which have bred them in the past, so they are not really hard to see anywhere in europe. In the case of tarsiers, Leipzig would be the only holder of that species in europe.

I don't know, how good are the connections of Leipzig Zoo to Madagascar to get Aye-Aye's, if they have the chance to import them, they should use the chance to import also a female for Berlin Zoo.

In the case of tarsiers, in depend on what species they want to get. A couple of years ago, a curator of Cleveland Zoo told me, it would be easy to get tarsiers for the USA, but no other us zoo was interested in them, and for single zoo it was to expensive to import tarsiers.Thats why they are now extinct in the USA.

Altough I would like to see tarsiers in Gondwanaland,it is not a good idea to keep them in just one zoo in europe. So its impossible to create a population of tarsiers in european collection and the same will happen as like as it has happen after the first attempt to keep tarsiers in europe, they are all gone.....

the latest news on Gondwanaland: Heidi the cross-eyed opossum! Check out the photos on the link, she's really adorable :D
Heidi, the Cross-Eyed Opossum, Becomes a Star in Germany - World Watch - CBS News
First, it was Knut, the overwhelmingly cute polar bear. Then, it was Paul, the World Cup oracle octopus. Now, the latest German zoo resident to gain massive fame is Heidi, the cross-eyed opossum, currently in residence at the Leipzig Zoo.

Heidi will not be on public view until July, but she already has 50,000 Facebook fans, a YouTube hit and a stuffed doll modeled after her, reports the German news magazine, Der Spiegel.

The adorable, Muppet-like opossum shot to fame after a German tabloid went to photograph the Leipzig Zoo's new "Gondwanaland," a theme area designed to recreate primitive times, according to the report. All it took was one look, and the German public was in love.

Heidi is a Virginia Opossum, which the Ohio Department of Natural Resources describes as "one of the oldest and most primitive species of mammal in North America. This animal is little changed from its ancestors 70 million years ago." Besides being the only marsupial to originate in North America, the species is most famous for giving rise to the phrase "playing possum," because they frequently react to threats by pretending to be dead.

Zoo officials speculate that her crossed eyes might have been caused by a bad diet early in life, Der Spiegel reports. The eyes might look off, but they cause the animal no pain, and don't affect her ability to get around, according to the zoo. She is, aside from her looks, a normal opossum.

Heidi isn't the only cross eyed oppusom, I've seen a lot of cross eyed opposums in the USA. Mostly, they become cross eyed, because they are too fat.....

The planting started today. The last animal (Pygmy hippos, Komodo dragons etc.) will arrive at the zoo in april/may...

To be sure: Will Gondwanaland be the biggest rainforest house in Europe, bigger than Burger's Bush? I'm not very good at German language (pretty lousy actually :P) but I thought I heard the words "größte tropenhaus der Europa" or something like that in the videos on Leipzig Zoo's website.

You're not alone, I will visit Gondwanaland this summer, only three weeks after the grand opening (1 july) and it will be the zoo-highlight of the year 2011! :D
