I was compiling a personal encyclopaedia, and was wondering in regards to reference.
I find that good reference sites can be hard to find. Wikipedia can be good - but sometimes I feel its writing quality is lacklustre. But unfortunately Wikipedia is a big fish in an even bigger pond - and many animal related websites I find merely exist to sell dog toys.
And so I have tried to be rather stringent, so here’s my current line up.
-The Internet Archive. I feel a strong competitor for ‘best website on the internet’. Millions upon millions of texts of all forms. Very accessible.
-Birds of the World. I have a subscription, and it is very nicely informative. I have also occasionally bought scientific papers to use as reference.
-ResearchGate. Say no more…
-Zoo websites. They tend to know what they are talking about in my experience, and are useful for notes in regards to animal husbandry.
-Government websites [such as NOAA]. They can be rather comprehensive, though this is no guarantee.
-Smaller blogs run by accredited peoples
And so that’s about it. I would like to hear any critique you have to offer about this lineup, and any suggestions for good websites.
