In 2007 one gorilla get birth, but she die , stillbirth. I dont now so mutch more , but have contacted Kolmarden Zoo fore a comment. And I hope , its birth one new gorilla baby in Kolmården, 2009!

(im not good in english)

Yes it is certain that Efate is the father of Enzo. Nasibu then was very childish and playful, and is probably not the father! However, there is nothing to say exactly that it is Efate, but I do not think Efate would allow Nasibu mate with Naomi.

That is not proof!! At Basel Zoo a male much younger than Nasibu was then fathered a baby in the presence of the Silverback male (paternity was confirmed by DNA test.) Why don't they do a DNA test to establish the father of Enzo? Nasibu is from a very underrepresented line and actually it would be better if he was the father rather than Efata.

People,

How old are either Efate and Nasibu?

If both are blackbacks/silverbacks ... what on Earth possessed managers to have 2 in a family group situation? I would say that spells disaster and is at least for both males rather stressful.

I would however concur that having a competitor male in the next enclosure is defendable (as has happened f.i. in Apenheul), but one needs extra holding facilities for that.

Dates have been supplied above.

Nasibu was born in Belfast and handraised at Stuttgart. He then grew up in the small Kolmarden group which is probably much better for him socially than a bachelor group as he has grown up with both a silverback male and females. Nasibu is genetically very important being the ONLY living (joint)descendant of my 'home' gorillas, Samson & Delilah of Bristol Zoo. That is why I said it would be better if he was the father of 'Enzo' than Efata who has other relatives. I should have thought the EEP would want to know for sure too.

Nasibu is now 12 years old. If he is not breeding in Kolmarden he needs to go somewhere where he can have an opportunity to breed. Hopefully as he is maturing he may have to leave Kolmarden's group which is very small with only one breeding female.

Pertinax,
rillekolmard,

Thanks for your comments. Regarding Nasibu and Efate paternity: Has DNA/genetics research been applied to determine Efate's paternity?

Further questions relating to the Kolmarden family group:
1) I thought that the gorilla EEP coordinator recommendation was 1.3 individuals?
2) Why is Iris (what is her genetic background) a non-breeding individual (incompatibility, medical history)?
3) At 12 is Nasibu not a candidate for becoming a group silverback judging by his genetic background and well socialised history in an established gorilla family group?
4) Any chance of more females to be absorbed into the Kolmarden breeding group?

Cheers,

Jelle

The baby is called Enzo. Regarding paternity I have not heard they have done a DNA test which is why I raised this question. Also the silverback Efata was handraised at Stuttgart which is why I have suspicions about his ability.;)

In answer to the other questions;
1. Kolmarden used to have a third female-Chiquita- but she died.
2. Iris is an older(age about 29) wildcaught female which originally came from Arnhem Zoo but I don't know the reason why she hasn't bred. I saw a nice photo of her carrying the baby 'Enzo' on her back after he was reintroduced into the group, so despite not breeding she evidently has good maternal instinct.
3. Nasibu should definately leave unless he is given some females where he is. He is one of the few unrepresented males(unless Enzo is his son) with a good social background and therefore a strong chance he would breed.
4. Kolmarden need a couple more females really but the two-male situation needs to be resolved first.

kolmårdens breeding female naomi is pregnant again she going probibly make the birth in the summer of 2009
