It is said that gorillas have been kept in Japan since 1954, but an advertisement for Hanayashiki Amusement Park from the Meiji period (which no longer keeps animals) features the name of an animal believed to be a gorilla called Gonilla (probably a misspelling of Gorilla). If this refers to a gorilla, it would mean that gorillas have been kept in Japan since before the war (although it is unclear whether it is actually a gorilla).
