Bronx Zoo Gorilla Question

It was a real shame to see the loss of cheetahs from the bronx, especially as their replacement with Ostrich without any modifications to the exhibit is just inadequate. I would also love to know the history of the polar bears at the bronx/central park.

From the Asia entrance--actually immediately after entering the zoo--there's an open viewing area directly next to the camels 'winter' area in Wild Asia and they can be viewed here year-long.

I'd be interested in this too. I know there's a book of NY Zoos that briefly touches on these areas but I'd love to see more of a history!

I wonder if Bronx plans to acquire anymore cheetahs or something similar that can use the space. I assume their somewhat limited by the fact that the display is smack in the African Plains--they can't exactly move Jungleworld's sad jaguars there (nor do I think they be too happy there lol).

I don't know what they're doing now, but when I worked at the Bronx that is exactly what they did. It's amazing how much effort gets put into redesigning the signs twice a year and making new ones, but they did it.

Really? That's impressive! I know recently they redid the maps to 'winter' maps highlighting certain exhibits are rain/snow permitting (and of course, Asia isn't even on the map, nor is the gibbon island or the like..) but I never knew they did anything much more than that. Especially since I don't understand why the signs on the Mouse House doors haven't been updated at all in ages.

I own a copy of the gathering of animals by William Bridges, it was recommended to me by a docent at the Bronx and I also own Lee Crandalls wild mammals in captivity. I know they had three polar bears at the central park zoo when I first arrived in the USA 8 years ago (I think one died shortly afterwards?) and have assumed that there is only one polar bear at the Bronx. I'd be interested to know if he/she is singular and any recent breeding programs with this species by the WCS and if its planned to phase out the polar bear at the Bronx

According ISIS (not always the most reliable resource & all but....still)....the Bronx has two females and Central Park has 1 male and 1 female. I believe ISIS on this one relating to Central but....if Bronx has 2....I wonder what their procedure for rotating them on display is (if any).
