Gov. Greg Gianforte’s petition to remove most Montana grizzly bears from federal Endangered Species Act protection claims the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem population is ready to survive under state management.

“Threats to this species have been ameliorated due to the decades of hard work on the part of Federal, State, Tribal, local, and private interests,” the petition’s executive summary states. “(C)rucial habitats are now secure, the population has been increasing for over three decades, and regulatory mechanisms are in place to assure that the species remains in little danger of again needing protection of the ESA.”

About 1,000 grizzlies inhabit the 9,600-square-mile ecosystem that extends from Glacier National Park and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation south through the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex and Flathead Indian Reservation almost to Missoula. It is the most successful of six grizzly recovery areas established after the bear was given ESA protection in 1975. At that time, there were perhaps 600 grizzlies left in the Lower 48 states, down from an estimated 40,000 a century previous.

Why am I not surprised?

He's not doing this because he cares about the bears, all he's doing is catering to the hunting and ranching industries.

This is the same man who passed all the wolf killing legislation in Montana, the very reason wolves are being killed in that state, 20 wolves from Yellowstone have been killed already, one pack is now considered to be gone because of it.

This is the same governor who wants to put an end to American Prairie Reserve, granted there are a few things I think need to be changed (like their reluctance to reintroduce wolves and using human hunters to fill in for them, which is something I already spoke about). However, the BLM said it wouldn't threaten cattle ranching yet, he still wants it ended.

Heck, the USFWS already said the grizzly bear population in the lower 48 still needs protection a while ago, so don't tell me he used any science to do this.

The only people he wants actually participating in conservation are hunters because if that's the case, he won't get everything he wants. (I say this because he himself is a hunter and how he's handled every other wildlife issue.)

The entire system of managing wildlife in the USA by state game and fish departments is antiquated in my opinion. These agencies exist primarily to support hunters (though I realize they do actively preserve species that are not hunted, so-called "non-game species"). The one state that may be an exception is Hawaii? In my opinion all wildlife in the United States should be managed at the federal level by U.S. Dept. of Fish & Wildlife. Currently hunters are a small (very small) minority of the population. The only figure I have an exact number for (from a friend who used to work for Fish & Game) is my state of Arizona, where hunters make up five percent of the population. Think about that. Five percent dictating how wildlife is managed - in a so-called democracy. This is insane.

Wow, I never thought about that! I wish that this information and those statistics could be shown to the public. Are you suggesting the abolition of state game & fish or natural resource agencies and expansion of the US Fish & Wildlife Service?
