My guess is Dewitz is not informed well on the procedure and spoke without knowledge. She is not a vet. I am guessing they use fecal testing, as I would assume that is the way the labs are designed to assess for the virus.

Is this the first zoo animal death from COVID? I know the National Zoo in DC had some critically ill cats, but I think they have all survived to date.

there’s been animal deaths outside the US in zoos yes. This is probably though the first known death of an animal that died from Covid in a US zoo

On February 24th, the zoo announced they have hired a full-time veterinarian, Dr. Louden Wright of Tennesee.

On April 7th, the zoo announced that a 16.5-year-old (1.0) giant anteater named Mochila/Mooch was humanely euthanized on April 6th due to problems arising from advanced age.

On April 8th, the zoo announced that their (1.0) siamang gibbon named Liam is being transferred to the Denver Zoo in Colorado.

On June 3rd, the zoo announced that their 24-year-old (0.1) alpaca named Shakira has died. It is unknown what her cause of death was.

On July 5th, the zoo announced that (2.0) Nigerian dwarf goats were born. On August 12th, their names were announced, Hank and Frank.

On January 15th, 2022, the zoo announced they have acquired a (1.0) snow leopard named Strut from an undisclosed facility and has made his public debut.

He's actually been there for awhile as he was the other snow leopard who got COVID-19, though thankfully he survived (unlike his intended mate, Baya). He moved there from the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY where he was born on 5/30/18. It sounds like he must've been behind the scenes until recently based on their announcement.
 
On February 10th, the zoo announced that their (0.1) black-and-white colobus monkey named Mahale has passed away due to unspecified reasons, however, a necropsy has been performed.

On March 29th, the zoo announced that due to avian influenza, all bird species (besides penguins and flamingos) will be off-exhibit, feeders will be closed, and bird ambassadors will also not be present.
