Greater Vancouver Zoo Greater Vancouver Zoo News

As a belated birthday treat, I visited the zoo yesterday (January 20th) for a few hours and so have a few things to report. To keep things as clean and concise as I can, I'll be using point form and going chronologically by exhibit (as best as I can). If anyone has any questions, let me know!
  • All the felines were out and about today. It was really nice to see how well the snow leopards have settled in to their new home, they're lucky in getting the old baboon(?) enclosure as it had to be totally redesigned especially for them. (By the way, do we know what's become of Czara, the Eurasian lynx?)
  • I caught a glimpse of the new wood bison, Francis, alongside his ladies. They remain in the large enclosure in the very back of the zoo, alongside three American elk. The fourth elk, bull Manoah, remains in the original elk pen, alongside a single caribou. The rest of the caribou herd now reside in what was previously the moose pen.
  • There are several sheets of black cloth up between the grizzly bear trio and the American black bear trio's respective enclosures, exactly why was not disclosed.

  • Despite what the zoo's website says, I found the two male Addax housed in what the map says should be the zebu pen, while the females were in the onager pen. The zoo's single Nilgai, Nancy, is currently in with the Scimitar-horned oryx herd.
  • A few black sheets were also placed between the cheetah and bighorn sheep enclosures, though Ziya was undeterred and spent the entire time I watched her pacing back and forth, trying to catch a glimpse of her ungulate neighbors.

Renovations:
  • Work continues around the giraffe enclosure, along with on the train tracks adjacent to the wolf enclosure.

  • Also of note, a large tree has naturally come down near the cheetah exhibit

No-shows:
Theo (Southern white rhinoceros), along with all four red river hogs.
Boris and Optimus (African spurred tortoises).
Portly and Daisy (Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs, who's enclosure featured faded graffiti).

Haben and Hazina (Hippopotamus).
Shadow (Grizzly bear).
Sandy (American badger, who is also no longer listed on the zoo's website...).
And all of the zoo's birds continue to be off display, due to both the weather and on-going risk of avian influenza. Though the flamingo flock were partly viewable inside their indoor enclosure.

This visit definitely left me with mixed feelings and several questions for zoo management, including on how which renovation projects are prioritized.

Sorry @kermodei, I've been lazy with updating as of late. Here are some of the new developments:

Renovations:

The new operations manager has been doing a great job prioritizing and pushing projects along. The new giraffe outlook is now open. I understand the area is not quite completed as there is still some work to do in the barn, but at least it's accessible again.

Births:

Wallabies:
There are 2 wallabies with joeys at the moment. Keep your eye out for Fidget (Grey ear tag) and Ruby (No tag), as their joeys are starting to stick there heads out and look around.

Acquisitions:

Bison:
The zoo has acquired a new Wood Bison, Elly May (female, 14y), as they are continuing to increase the size of their bison herd.

Deaths:

Musk Ox:
Female Flo died this week, so the zoo is down to 2 musk oxen. The old girl hasn't been eating for some time, so it was expected. She really hasn't been the same since she lost her calf last year.

Zebra:
The young male zebra , Whiskers, the acquired from a private collection died last year. The autopsy revealed genetic irregularities.

Miscellaneous:

Hippopotamus:
It has been discovered that Haben is actually female, not male. She was not sexed correctly by the zoo she came from and has been renamed Habey.

@Cheetah No need to apologize! Interesting, if tragic, updates, though. Not entirely surprised by the situation with "Whiskers", as I can't imagine animals from private collections have the best genetics :S And I might just be out of the loop but was Flo's calf simply moved to another facility or did they die? I can imagine that either way, it took a toll on a herd-based animal.

Visited the zoo again recently and so can share a few visuals for the following updates !

Given the chilly weather, all three giraffes were indoors during my visit, but I checked out the new outlook regardless and it's pretty nice. Still wheelchair/stroller accessible on the left, and offers a good view of the main African plains enclosures.

Seems Elly May has been officially integrated into the herd, as all four bison were out and about together.

A few updates from this weekend's (April 1st, 2023) visit:
  • Don't let the grey clouds fool you, the weather here is finally warming up! And so hippo sisters Hazina and Habey have access to the outdoor portion of their enclosure again.

  • Work on the giraffe house is finally complete and you can once again walk between it and the red river hog/Southern white rhinoceros enclosure.

  • Though the enclosure itself remains empty of animals, the Vietnamese pot-bellied pig house has been repainted, finally covering up that awful graffiti.

  • And in what is undoubtedly the most exciting update I have to share, the red kangaroo/red-necked wallaby enclosure is being renovated! With what seems to be a new walkway being installed.

A bonus bit of news, for those that have been following the naming contest for the zoo's red panda twins, the winning names will be announced this Friday, April 7th! (Fingers crossed they're creative choices).

We were down there today too, as usual. It's looking good down there!

A few updates from the end of April/beginning of May:

  • Thanks to the warmer weather, the zoo's birds are back on display, including the new quartet of American white pelicans, males Lockport (8yo), Willy (8yo), Gulliver (9yo) and Hubba (12yo).

  • As well, the zoo's pair of Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs, Daisy and Portly, are back on display.

  • Work continues on what I'd call the "Australia enclosure", which includes the zoos red kangaroos, red-necked wallabies and singular emu. It looks like the goal is to create a walk-through type of enclosure, letting guests get closer to the animals.
54a90a01e690dd8f66284214ea9b5889d3b70549.jpg
  • As the grizzly bear cubs (Henry, Huggy Bear and Scout) continue to grow, plans are in the works to move them into what is currently the American black bear enclosure, while the zoo's black bears (Basil, Rosemary and Thyme) will be moved into an entirely new exhibit, on the left of adult grizzly Shadow's enclosure.

Just a few things of note. I think it's safe to say that Princess, one of the zoo's two elderly common elands, has passed away. I haven't seen her on exhibit in over a month and her name has been removed from the zoo's profile for the species. On the other hand, a pair of white-tailed deer have been born! Their names are Osage and Aspen (no word on the sexes yet) and I spotted one today, unexpectedly, during my visit.

A fall updates for fall. I'll try to do a better job of updating and these next couple of months will be busy for zoo news.

- The kangaroo/wallaby walkthrough will be closed for the year Sept 30th. There is not enough in the budget to keep staff there in the winter since they wasted so much money keeping a staff member at the silly dinosaur gift shop all summer.

Deaths:

The 19 year old Eland Ernie died last week. Sahara the zebra now has that whole enclosure to herself.

Butter, the young big horn sheep died a few months ago, but i was slow on the updates.

Transfers:

Tika, the cheetah who was on loan from Toronto, has been sent back.

@Cheetah Thank you for the updates!

Ernie really was on his last legs the past few weeks, which was hard to watch, so as much as I'll miss him, it eases me to know he's no longer struggling. With his passing, too, that back corner row of enclosures becomes even more empty. As for Butter, was this one of the three(?) calves born this year?

And Tika! :'( She was always one of my favourites to visit with, even if I only saw her on a handful of occasions, so I'll miss her terribly. Any word on why she was sent back?

Butter was born this year and died a few days or weeks after. With Tika, she was not so keen on being on view as she was getting older. Even I noticed over the past year that she wasn't coming over to me at the fence as much, purring and rubbing against the fence.

The first of the red panda cubs has been transferred. Mei Mei was moved to Assiniboine Zoo on Wednesday.
You beat me to it! :p

Other than that, it may be worth sharing that signage around the cheetah enclosure has been removed, perhaps signalling a new species, rather than more cheetahs, will eventually fill the exhibit. And, while I hate to end on a sad note, it should be noted that the ostrich chick born last month passed away a little while back.
