Greenville Zoo Greenville Zoo News

I think she will either be transferred to Dallas, as we have an opening for a geriatric female... Or she will be transferred to the National elephant center...

A commendable decision.

I hope they can manage to do something worthwhile with the current exhibit too. Any plans for this already (perhaps slightly premature)?

I came here to share the same news:

Greenville Zoo, SC

Kiko has a huge fan-base! Lots of people will be sad to see him go, but there are two female giraffe who likely will be happy to have a male companion.

Kiko will be well loved and care for up here in Toronto. He is joining mother Twiga and his future mate 18 month old Mstari. Their exhibit just opened last spring. Jump over to the Toronto gallery to get a look at both the indoor holdings and the yard. He will be very happy in his new home and additional females are supposed to join him once they become available.

I have seen pictures of the new Giraffe House, and M'Stari and Twiga. Kiko should be happy there! Did you say more females eventually? ;)

Yes I did. The zoo has asked for more females to be brought in but they have to wait until more females become available... part of it might have been the zoo waiting for Kiko to be selected. We have been waiting for a new breeding male since our previous one Stripes died in 2013. Our other adult female died in Jan 2014. Both were older animals. Twiga thankfully had Mstari not long after Stripes passing so she wasn't alone but we have been waiting for our new guy a long time. The zoo's biggest problem is that it currently isn't AZA accredited... long story, don't ask... so when the two previous recommendations were made for males their home zoo's rejected it. Thankfully Greenville and Franklin Park were willing to make the trade. Hopefully by the time he and Mstari are ready to breed we can bring in more females for him. The zoo can house 6-8 giraffes so its possible he will have two more mates.

Greenville Zoo posted pictures of the lovey Twiga and M'Stari, as well as the Giraffe House. I know Kiko will love it there! :)
