I found this website last night and it's wonderful! I've described it to several of my tech friends as "it's the macrumors.com of zoos." (This is high praise)
I'm a 25 year old graduate student working on a Masters of Public Administration at the University of North Texas in Denton where I received my BA in Political Science. I've been on this kick lately considering what I could do with my Master's degree and have started thinking about zoo management considering my degree trains me for the management of government agencies and non-profits.
I grew up in Friendswood, a suburb of Houston in Galveston county and consider Houston Zoo to be my home zoo, but, since I have been living off and on in Denton for the last six years, I have a good feel for the Dallas and Fort Worth Zoos as well. I also try and stay current on San Antonio Zoo and Fossil Rim Wildlife Park.
For Christmas and my birthday this year (they are within six days of each other) the best presents i got were "The Politics of Zoos" by Jesse Donahue and Erik Trump and "America's Best Zoos" by Allen Nyhuis and Jon Wassner (not crazy about Gingrich writing the forward, but what he had to say was pretty good).
My favorite animals tend to be large African creatures; specifically elephants, rhinos, and hippos. I am excited that this year Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston will be making giant strides in opening major new African exhibits. I've previously been to San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Los Angeles Zoo, San Francisco, Disney's Animal Kingdom, Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park, and five previously mentioned Texas Zoos/Wildlife Parks.
I look forward to spending a lot of time here.
