Zoo Frankfurt Grzimek House/Frankfurt Zoo

You will defintely see the Grzimek-House next year.
The way I know Frankfurt, the demolition or rehabilitation of the House will happen soonest in 2014-2015. The new building of the entrance and the tropic bear exhibit is going to start in 2010....

All the plans have been developed before the global financial crisis really started. Frankfurt, as the finance capital of Germany, will be suffering more than any other city in the country. I really do believe, that the future of the Grzimek-house is secured for the next couple of years.

Beside of this, its strange that a new entrance is one priority and leaving the terrible hippo exhibit untouched...

I bet, the hippos will leave the zoo in the next years, because there is no space in the zoo for a large and modern hippo house and Kronberg will build a new hippo house in the next years.

That would be better than keeping them in an enclosure like this !
The whole rhino house ( former elephant house) needs to be renovated - much more important than a new entrance area....just my 2 cents.

Does the Frankfurt Zoological Society still own the land in Niddatal? Many years ago there were plans for an out-of-town open zoo a bit like London's Whipsnade, but as far as I know it never got very far.

No, FZS was forced to sell it to the city.
The plans for one second zoo have been totally cancelled years ago-:(

I really do believe, that the future of the Grzimek-house is secured for the next couple of years.

Does anybody have any further news on this? Are the plans for the redevelopment of the Grzimek House the sort that will sit, gathering dust for many years (rather like those for a new zoo in the countryside outside Frankfurt)? Or is anything going to happen in the foreseeable future?

And has anything happened with the building of the new entrance and bear enclosures?

Thank you, in advance.

@Sooty Mangabey. Construction of the new entrance and bear enclosures will start this year, maybe in summer. The Zoo hopes, to start construction of a new penguin house as an expansion to the Exotarium next year, with a planned opening in 2013. The next project after this will be the new Grizmekhouse. They have to build the new Grizmekhouse first before destroying the old house, so I guess, the Grizmekhouse will be there until 2015 or 2016.

What is the current state of plans for the Grzimek House? In the regular news thread there has been no mention of any redevelopment and it's clear from the gallery it is still very much in use.

No mention any longer of long term plans for Exotarium or Grzimekhaus. So in that respect no news. So, it is kind of off the rack with only a new Penguin facility to be built in the next year or so.

Well, news-wise … the usual comings and goings only (but that was somehow not what you were after).

Thanks very much. I suppose that was what I was expecting. I've surprised myself with a connection through Frankfurt Airport so I'll be visiting next month. I'm excited to visit although looking at gentlelemur's photos in the gallery I think I may be several decades too late!

I visited in 2004 and I was also several decades too late I think! I did see the last Picathartes though, which was quite something.

Get any good photos? As noted in the species loss thread, that's one we don't have many decent shots of in the gallery (due in this case to the Great Purge getting rid of some I think)

I only had a film camera, with the attendant 24 photo limit per roll, so I only took photos where I knew they would come out. Nothing in the bird house unfortunately - and I only remember the Picathartes, shoebill, and a pigmy kingfisher (which amazed me because it was the first time I'd seen one in real life and it was so tiny!).

For some idiotic reason to do with not wanting to pay the extra entrance fee that was in place at the time, I decided not to go into the Exotarium and have always regretted it.
