Every week i will be posting clues which lead to a country, you can guess and in the days following i will give the answer

The first is:
It was a former British Colony
It was considered one of the 4 gems of the British Empire
Most people Live on the Coast
It's population is 772,298
It was given independence during Britains economic boom

Now it's time to say

I'm going to agree with malayan tapir on Guyana (formerly british guiana) which is coastal, a former british colony and probably has a population of about 750,000.
