I guess that makes number 2 the Ethiopian mountain adder Bitis parviocula then.

I don't know the antelope.

Correct about the adder.

You also illuminated a detail about the missing animal that hasn't yet been picked up on...

that its an antelope rather than a deer? Someone suggested gerenuk earlier (but the neck is way too short).

Ah yes. I missed that. It is indeed an antelope. An antelope a smidge smaller than a gerenuk.

we don't have many antelopes in NZ so I'm not good with them, especially if someone isn't a good enough photographer to get the head unobscured in the shot :p

Alright, may be time for some hints as this has stagnated.

DesertRhino did in fact get three in his first post.

The remaining ones include a species that as recently as 1995 was known from only three specimens.

Is it an Ader's duiker? I thought if it was that rare it must be a saola but as far as i know there aren't any in captivity, even in Vietnam.

the snake is the one formerly known from only three specimens ;)

I don't think the antelope's a duiker, the legs look too long and skinny

Not likely to be confused for a duiker but a speaker of German may confuse it with an ibex!

That is correct. DesertRhino wins with 4, Chlidonias with 1

1. Black-and-Rufous Giant Elephant-Shrew - Zoo Boise
2. Ethiopian Pit Viper - San Diego Zoo
3. Steenbok - San Diego Zoo Safari Park (the best photo I got of the skittish little thing)
4. Harlequin Duck - San Diego Zoo
5. Southern Bald Ibis - San Diego Zoo Safari Park
