Guess the zoo

No Bristol Zoo is not correct. (You're right, of course, that Bristol is one of the oldest in the UK but, perhaps surprisingly, I don't think Bristol has ever had common hippos.)

Its interesting but I agree in thinking Bristol have never had Common hippo. There has never been any enclosure that evidently could have housed them in the past.

Answer to this question- Jamrach's perchance?

And I just want to double check that we aren't allowed to use any resources to check we're right? It has to come from our own zoo based knowledge?
I think that (clearly) just googling the answer is not acceptable, because it's a quiz. However, I think that if you have an idea you can use a search to corroborate it. So, as an example, if you wanted to guess Bolderdash Zoo but didn't know if the time frame fitted, you could google when that zoo opened. If I was using resources outside my own brain, I would say it when I posted my answer for the sake of clarity (just because that's the way I am).

Didn't the world fair in Crystal Palace house the first hippo born in Artis Amsterdam (and most probably the first birth in a European zoo as well), this must have been in 1860, the hippo tragically died in a fire though....

The European Hippo Studbook records that a hippopotamus born in Amsterdam on 29th July 1865 was sent to Crystal Palace on 9th June 1866.

However, Crystal Palace is not the answer to this question; a UK zoo, other than London, exhibited a hippopotamus before the one at Crystal Palace.

if I may ask a clue-related question: is this zoo still in operation?

I think everyone might be stumped. Perhaps another clue might be in order.

OK: a clue.

The second zoo in the UK to exhibit a hippopotamus closed in the nineteenth century.

To commerate the city's zoo and its hippo, a
statue of a hippotamus was erected in the city not far from the site of the old zoo.

There's a hippo statue in Walsall but I don't recall hearing about a zoo there?

I don't think that there was ever a zoo in Walsall; anyway this is not the answer.

(I"ve never visited Walsall and was unaware of the hippo statue there so I was interested to learn this.)

I have no idea. I have so much of a no idea that I gave up on playing this round and just tried to google the answer. I couldn't find the answer. So I still have no idea!

Does the hippo statue still exist?
