Guess the zoo

Was there a zoo in Hull?

Yes, that is the correct answer.

Hull Zoological Garden was the second zoo, in the UK, after London, to exhibit a hippopotamus. As previously mentioned, Hull's hippo is actually commemorated by a hippopotamus statue, situated near the site of the old zoo.

A little more information:-

In 1860 London Zoo acquired the hippotamus "Bucheet" which was shipped to London together with two shoebills; the shoebills were the first of their species at London Zoo and were, almost certainly, the first living shoebills ever to leave Africa.

London Zoo did not keep the hippo, presumably, because the collection already included a pair of hippos; the male "Obaysch" (received 1850) and the female "Adhela" (obtained 1854 ).

The hippo "Bucheet" was sold and then temporarily housed in Hull Zoo; the hippo was eventually shipped to North America.

I believe "Bucheet" was the first hippo to reach America; he subsequently died in a Canadian circus in 1867.

That was a great round @Tim May! I kind of snuck in at the end there with that helpful clue! :D

Alright, here is my question (this is a little complicated, but bear with me):

In what zoo would you find that a rhyming name has been bestowed upon the entrance to the exhibit for the most ailuring inhabitants present?

"Bear with me" suggests Ailuropoda rather than Ailurus, but I can't think of a giant panda exhibit that starts with a Soda Pagoda or a Conservation Station.

By probability of geography, Adelaide perhaps?

I've been trying to think up rhyming names too, and then see if they connect to zoos' panda exhibits. Not working. I only came up with the Panda Meander, and the China Diner (in case the entry was "themed"). The Bamboo Curtain would be good, but it doesn't rhyme.

So I'm just going to go with Ouwehands, because they have Pandasia so are bound to have some other pun in there as well.

On the right track, but again not the right zoo. Its not actually a zoo I've been to (and I've been to 8 with pandas on display).

Panda Canyon at San Diego? Not very poetic but worth a shot all the same.

"Its not actually a zoo I've been to..."

Just realised you said not... ignore my guess! ;)

isn't that called Panda Trek?

Another non-starter is Toronto Zoo's "Giant Panda Experience"*. They probably paid a marketing person a million dollars to come up with that name.

*(Possibly also what @Giant Panda uses as a pick-up line in bars)

There's some good guesses, but none quite right yet. Although I love the idea of Ailuropoda Pagoda!

on the basis that the name of the zoo itself is a pun, and therefore they are likely to have some sort of whimsical theme, I'll guess at Pairi Daiza.

I thought about Pairi Daiza, but can't remember any rhyming names. Also, how does zooboy know about this when he hasn't visited and the name can't be Googled?

Anyway, I'll take a punt on Memphis. (zoo)boy you've got a prayer in Memphis...

I'd suggest there's a photo in the gallery.
