Chester Zoo Guessing Game

Also on my visit yesterday I notice that in the congo buffalo house the end two pens were boarded up, usually if there's a birth they will just close the house so could there be another species arriving soon?

I didn't get a chance to ask the keepers
Its been like that for a couple of weeks not sure why either.

Yep so could i just a thought but could it be the Dik-diks in their!

Good point, didn't someone say that they would be mixed with the giraffes?

If so, wasn't there a gate (that oryx, I believe, used) between the giraffe paddock and the buffalo paddock, so the dik-dik could use this to stay seperated. (unless the gate has been demolished...)

I think the gates still in place as its still the same fence that was in place when the Oryx shared the paddock with the Giraffe.

Could well be, I thought they were going to placed in the house along the side of giraffe.

would make sense why they put rocks out side the door to allow Dik-dik a place to escape from the giraffes

Apparently the enclosure which used to house the pudu is for the bush dogs and the pudu is in the old bush dog enclosure. Quite why this movement has taken place I do not know unless it is for animal health reasons such as parasites. The dik-dik are in the giraffe annex and will be going into the round enclosure by the staff entrance when the bush dogs move.

That seems to be the current plan anyway.

Well thats a bit of a let down from what i was told but still makes alot of sense.

Bongorob, did you manage to find out what arrived or departed in the huge animal transporter that gentle lemur saw a few days ago?

Shame, they seem to like sticking unsually species away in places of the zoo that get hardly visisted. :(

I think i can solve the mystery for you, some sea lions left belfast zoo on friday, they were transported from belfast in the lorry that brought yhetoo over to Belfast from Krefeld, hence the large transporter.

That would make sense...

Didn't Whipsnade and Chester do something similar with their Indian Rhinos last year? Basle sent a truck with Baatschi in to Chester and the same truck picked up Jaffna from Whipsnade and returned to him to Basle on the way back...

That is correct, and would also example why I only saw 1.1 sea lions when I was there last.

Its what's known in the haulage business as a 'back load' saves costs for the zoo's, increases earnings for transporters and is more environmentally friendly :)

That doesn't quite answer the "two males" question though, as there is only 1.0 pudu and 1.2 bush dogs.

I would prefer the dik-diks in with the giraffes, as it makes geog sense and although they might be hard to see it would make the area more interesting.

Do you mean that the sea-lions have gone to Chester? Do you know how many? Thanks

.

I'm not sure whether that actually happened or not. There was some indication on the Forum that Basel weren't ready for Jaffna then and so he may have returned a bit later, but it would certainly have made economic sense.

I got the info round my neck on this one, the sea lions were going to Rotterdam, NOT Chester, but he the transporter did stop at Chester en-Route to collect some crates (empty I believe) to return to the another collection on the european mainland

This just gets more and more complicated. Zoogiraffe's two males (species unknown) should be in the zoo tomorrow, but the enclosure which used to house the pudu had six huge bags of sand in it on Wednesday, suggesting work is still being carried out.
