Tierpark Hagenbeck Hagenbecks Elephants

Does anyone know what ( if at this time) bull is planning to replace Hussein when he goes to Dublin??

I think that question is still a work in progress. Kandy is now 5 years old now, so Hussein has only limited time left in Hamburg (Bangka is 8 now and she started to present herself to Alexander last year.... so work out the maths). In two years time the bull section will be finished in Dublin, so there's a clear timeframe. Only to leave Hamburg without a breeding bull would really be a wast of all the efforts.

My impression is that the EEP really does want to work out some longer term plans, but reality sometimes does present itself with another situation. Like Rotterdam having a proven bull to replace Alexander and then he had to be euthanized ... This is no algabra, but life and things happen.

yeah poor Palong! yeah with Kandy being 5 the time will come soon! Same with Ratna and Corny moving too! ;) But there is hope to get Ratna and Chamundi to breed being not related at all, there is talk about getting him to move on another thread until he gains confidence though,

oh and also, since Calvin is over at Leipzig, wonder how long it will take for Salvana to come back to Hamburg, ?

Hussein lives alone with Mala in his enclosure and the cows with witch he should breed are brought to him. So no problem to keep Kandy and Hussein.

I think it´s hard to find a bull for Hamburg, 'cause its possible to feed (and so to pet the trunk) the elephants. Some bull like Bindu would have fun with the visitors... Also I don't think, that the enclosure would hold any bull inside...

Is there any bull that comes to mind that is friendly enough and well behaved enough to fit the requirements of Hamburg? I know of friendly and calm ones, but I'm not sure that they would be fine with people feeding them! ?

It`s a problem which can be solved, the outdoor enclosure (just) needs to be changed so that there is so much space between visitors and the bull elephant that he can`t reach them. That is not THAT difficult and could be done.

*grin* Its esay done, but what should the visitors think if they can't feed during winter elephants? ;) In winter only Hussein and Mala are outdoors.

Is Hamburg planning any other exhibit construction for the elephants? I mean after the indoor expansion in 2006, I presume they won't be doing anything much for a while??

Oh, i am really surprised... Twice the week i am visiting the elephants at Hagenbeck and normally they are in the enclosures outside in wintertime. Exceptions are possible: when it is snowing (rarely in Hamburg) because of the danger of slipping or in the moment, because of the newborn. They don´t want to separate the herd (the others inside become jealous and angry!) and for the little bullcalf it´s too cold in the moment. In wintertime you´ll find the Hagenbeck elephants normally in the afternoon 2 - 3 hours outside, not more, because of the danger of freezing the ears etc.

@ dragon: In the moment Hagenbeck has to rebuild the "Eismeer" for the next years, which costs a lot. After this project they have some plans to expand the elephant-enclosure a lot and to modify the present one. There is room enough at the other side of the present bull-enclosure.

I think it is not the right way and time now to participate the wild guess, what will happen when Hussein is eventually (!) leaving Hagenbeck: Wait and see!;)

Awesome! :) the large herd at Hamburg is getting a new large exhibit! It is quite like Emmen, they have an enclosure large enough for the elephants but building something else that is state-of the art or brand new

To Terra Natura maybe? thanks!:)

They always communicated that it would be Sevilla, since he is not only successfull as a breeder, but also most of his offspring is alive an thriving. And he's a second generation himself (his younger brother Victor is also a breeder), so there's enough of that gene-pool in the captive elephant population. Don't forget that there are 3/5 breeding facilities where he has left a lasting influence (Rotterdam, Dublin, Amsterdam, hopefully Antwerp and hopefully Amersfoort).

Yesterday 'Thura' gave birth to a female calf. The birth took place in the birth-indoors behind the big indoors. With her at that time was 'Shandra'.
Father is as always breedingbull 'Hussein'.
