Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton News 2022

I think I remember around 2016-ish, there was seemingly a 'quoll boom' across Europe, where many zoos that did not have quolls before started to get them. Fast forward to 2020-ish, the quoll boom resulted in a quoll washout, where from their short lifespans, essentially all of these quolls disappeared.

With the exception of Bristol and Frankfurt, all the births outside of Leipzig were from animals imported pregnant from Leipzig. Apart from Leipzig, only Frankfurt has bred this species more than once.

This shows how difficult it is to maintain such a species and while it is sad the last individual died in Hamerton, this import was probably doomed from the start and from all the Australian imports this was one of the most foolish...

As said by TeaLovingDave if it had not been for red tape considerably delaying the arrival, then this could have been a successful program. To label it as foolish seems very harsh, especially when you consider how successful they are with the vast majority of their breeding programs.

As said earlier on this thread and given the experience of other European zoos, quoll in general are extremely hard to sustain a viable captive population of, only Leipzig has managed so far in Europe. Key to such programs is number, in total Leipzig has imported 12 quolls over the years (6 initially), so 4 is a very low number as a start. If the animals would have been younger it could have been successful, but the chances of it are lower than when you import a group of spinifex hopping mice. And even if breeding started, there is a very low chance that there would be much long term success, without continuous collaboration with Australia.

According to Zootierliste, Hamerton received 2,0 white-nosed coatis (Nasua narica) from Zie-Zoo in January, making them the only members of their species in the UK!

Ooh that's nice - and quite surprising too, as I thought all Coatis were being phased out of UK zoos.

Lovely news about the baby possums as well!

Are there still Aardwolfs at Hamerton or have they died by now? Does anywhere still have Aardwolves in the UK. Just been watching this Youtube video and it showed Aardwolves at Hamerton, but was about 4 years old the video.

ZTL says that Hamerton has the eastern and southern aardwolf. Halle and Novosibirsk have eastern aardwolves.

If it helps, they were still there in 2020..
Though seeing as all the other animals on the continent are males, and the female they have is a fairly old animal, I don't see much potential for breeding in future.. [Unless Park Cottage still has them ?]
But Hamerton being Hamerton, we will just have to see..

One of each subspecies:)

That's good to hear, though I remember when I went in 2018, they had two aardwolves in one of the enclosures..
I do hope that aardwolves will not be forgotten by Hamerton in the future!

They had a pair of Eastern but one died unfortunately. I doubt aardwolves have much of a future at Hamerton given there aren't really any reliable sources to obtain more.

Park Cottage *never* bred the species, and have not held them for some time - their last animal went to Hemsley and died not all that long afterwards.

They're still listed on their website, but I appreciate that could be out of date as not sure how often it's updated.
