Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton News 2022

Until this year I nearly always saw the golden Possum late in the day, but this year I've only seen one twice in 8 visits, both times just after opening.

Could someone help me identify this animal?
I tried google image reverse, and it said it was a sheep o_O haha

I took this April 18th. I don't think I've seen it on our visits after that day.

Love the corsacs they are wonderful - you’ll see their coats change as the seasons change and they almost look like different creatures, shifting colour as well as thickness and watching that over the months as you visit Hamerton is awesome imho.

Oh wauw, thanks! I simply didn't recognize them
I found these 2 looking so different from all the others I took pictures of that day.
So they must have been changing coats then, as you say Lafone.

They really morph into very different looking little foxes - I've popped some of my Hamerton Corsac fox photos here to show you the difference. During their transition they can look very scraggy particularly in the spring as they loose their winter coats, they are fantastic to watch, I love them!

Hamerton Zoo have now publicly announced the importation of a trio of Lesser Spot-nosed Guenons from Metro Richmond Zoo, USA. The monkeys have now moved into the main part of the zoo: Hamerton Zoo Park - Animal Park Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire

Awesome!! Now that the guenons are officially announced I would like to bring up the question I asked some time ago when the guenons were first being discussed:

I am not going to hold my breath for an answer to come out anytime soom, but I do want to ask if Hamerton is working with the AZA for a possible breeding program like they did with the ringtail SSP. I am aware that Lesser Spot-nosed Guenons do not have a SSP at this moment but if not for cooperation I do not know why would there be a need to send away guenons to Europe from America.

Had a lovely day at Hamerton today - was mostly dry and not too cold so loads of animal activity. Quite a few visitors.

First actually saw a whole ring tailed possum! Rather than the back end of one. That’s one possum off the list.

The guenons are awesome - very active all day so easy to see and then to watch while they played and spent time in both enclosures - even when one was in the rear area the others were at the front. First sighting of these for me and just lovely. A real treat to have these rare species in the U.K.

Got some lovely views of the camomistle at feeding time as well as the skunk - a rare double for me.

The corsac foxes are starting to turn their coats - the changing of the seasons is really upon us!

A clutch of Scarlet ibis and Curassow eggs were cooking away in the incubators and was good to see the young curassow and Argus pheasant chick doing so well in the nursery. The young turaco was also out and about in its aviary.

Elusive possum status: golden elusive.

Even more sad news this morning, they have just announced that Tanzi, the female Canadian Lynx has also passed away. Not been a good year.

That's sad, what a shame. Must be a hard time for the keepers and the zoo, what a grim week for them.

There have been some very sad losses for Hamerton recently but I don't think it makes it a bad year overall given all the new arrivals, successful births, new developments.

I guess part of running a successful zoo is the cycle of the animals dying as well as arriving and I have to say I admire zoo keepers and owners for managing that so well.

Had a lovely day at Hamerton today - weather forecast was cloudy but instead it was sunny and warm enough to bring lots of animals out which was excellent.

The young cassowary has made the move into the cassowary paddock next to the stork on the way to the vultures, though it looked as if it was not allowed in all of the space yet. How nice to see it from a chick to getting to an adult enclosure. The young birds in the nursery area are growing well.

The new tortoise house is coming along well with front now on (phone pic attached) and there was some work also going on in the enclosures next to the anteater.

Having said I hadn’t seen the new infant red bellied tamarin it was then very visible! Cool stuff. Saw the binturong in the old otter enclosure which was nice.

The guenon were great to watch again - such an active species to have. Got to see the skunk and camomistle just before closing again which was great.

Elusive possum status - elusive!

We were there today!
Got there slightly early, around 9.30 and left around 3pm.

Saw the Lynx a couple of times in different spots.
The Corsac Foxes now all look poofy and floofy, hehe.
Jaguarundi was in and out quite a bit, I finally managed to get a half decent photo.
And the Tigers got given a big sack (with catnip?), which was nice to see them react too.

And also we, did not see the possums.

Recent visit noticed that the new tortoise house is coming on nicely and work on the new meerkat enclosure is also progressing well. Other works of note, new living house for the coatis and a new house in the otter enclosure with a viewing window.
