Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton News 2023

The barrier is quite close now, so she's certainly viewable.

When we went last week, the barrier was still so, that you could only see the back corner of the enclosure.
Maybe another week or so then, with school having started again, it's definately not as loud or busy anymore.

Ah that's great, I'm visiting in 5 weeks so fingers crossed the barrier will be gone by then
:p

Made my first visit today and what can I say? It’s a zoo nerds dream. Didn’t manage to spot the hyenas but still got to see many other things I’ve never seen before.

For those wanting to know, this is the current fenced off area for Brown Hyena. You’re about 2 metres from the stand off barrier and 3.5m to the mesh. It is now possible to see Shenzi and with a 300mm camera plus it is possible to get photos when she is out in the central to right side of the exhibit.

Had a lovely day out at Hamerton today. Warm and sunny, the light was excellent and it wasn't too busy.

The dinosaur train route has ended and the train has gone back to it's old route, circling around the main picnic area and then going up to the tiger house and back.

Saw the brown hyena early on and then again at feeding time just before closing. A proper 'wow' moment - really pretty.

Enjoyed the Saurus crane chick enormously. I was really looking forward to seeing it and it didn't disappoint. Very active and being fed by both parents. Interesting to see the similarities to the Japanese red crane chick at Whipsnade - similar shape, brown downy feathers but in a more stripey pattern.

The new bear and dingo viewing platform is simply excellent. It's been a while watching it being constructed and it's a great space that was well worth the wait. The completed dingo enclosure is also good and interesting to see the housing (which you can see into from above at the far end of the platform).

The new platform offers super views of the bear enclosure, an excellent panorama over the surrounding countryside and some excellent angles for photographing swooping kites which is a bonus if you like that sort of thing! It'll be good to see the dingoes from when they move in and you can see the other hyena enclosure (under construction) too. Great space to spend time in and lots of different angles to enjoy. The bears are getting used to the new windows (there were signs asking for a bit of quiet in the indoor area) but they didn't seem fussed. A bonus to be able to spot the tiger at the back of the enclosure from up there too, so you know if one of them is out or not.

Added a few photos to the gallery.

Also enjoyed sightings of the rusty spotted cat, which I never see and the jackals. And the cacomistle before closing. Great to be able to get alongside the corsac fox enclosure again too now the hyena viewing restriction has moved back and nice to see their coats changing.

So I visited Hamerton for the first time on the 24th.
I had to walk over an hour, but it was worth it. I have some news however it's possible that everything is already known so apologize if I post something previously posted.
First of the sectioning of of the brown hyena enclosure is not finished however she is very visible and a little curious. She is the most stunning Brown hyena I've seen and also the only one however I'm certain Brown hyenas are the most beautiful species of hyena.
They informed me they don't want to make a mistake so they're slowly moving the barrier up and are slowly introducing the species.
Next I'll tell a little about tempering peoples expectations since zootierliste is a little off about certain species. The fat sand rat, prevost squirrel, swinhoes striped squirrel all left the collection. As in they all died some over 2-3 years ago.
I also regret to inform the Johnston's cassowaries both died, the autopsy results aren't fully in. So currently the offspring of the Southern cassowaries is in the on show enclosure and since only sub-species differs they're not hasty to fix the sign. Also these animals are behind the scenes: Marbled southern gecko, Carter's rock gecko and the New guinea ground cuscus.
I can confirm they imported the 3 Brown hyenas from South Africa. Hamerton is not afraid to import and will do so.
They tried to infer about importing Syrian Brown bears, to no avail since the purity was not assured.
The staff was very helpful, so I could spot all the animals that were on my list that I didn't see before. They also told me they do intend to breed with most if not all animals.
Also a White cheecked turaco chick was in an incubator.
So again if you ever miss seeing a species you can ask the staff they're very friendly, passionate and helpful!

Sounds like a fun visit!

I miss the squirrels running around in the runs across the lemur enclosures etc. was fun to spot them. The little house is still there so I always hope Hamerton will put another species in it at some point, not that they are short of interesting things to see.

Had our vist ever vist to Hameton today and found it an interesting zoo with mixed feelings towards it.
Found so many no shows but of course it was a cold day so hardly surprising.
I am not a big fan of the wired enclosures they have but the selection of animals on display is huge. All the newer enclosures are very nice indeed and loved the tigers and bears enclosures.
Couple of questions we couldn't find the Jaguarundi anywhere do they still hold these as they are very prominent on the website.
Also is the female tiger new? The way the male and female were interacting between the enclosures made us think it was new.
Will definitely go back in a couple of years to see how the zoo has changes.
