Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton Zoo News 2019

Five red-handed tamarins arrived at Hamerton today from collections in Germany and the Czech Republic; the species is returning after a gap of several years. Once they have settled in, two pairs will live in the two small monkey houses and the single remaining female is being mixed with an elderly male Geoffroy's marmoset until another male red-handed tamarin arrives.

I had a lovely morning there on Monday (though I didn't see the lesser spotted migdog!) getting a lovely view all to myself of one of the wombats wandering around as I'd rushed ahead of the others arriving at opening time. Watched a caracal running around part of the indoor barn area by the servals and was mildly amused by the cheetahs being called both lions and tigers by various passing parents. One of the quolls was being very active and I got some video and some rubbish blurry photos of it.

How long has the indoor area of one of the gibbon enclosures been viewable? Have I just managed to miss it every previous visit, or is this a new view? The highlight was definitely the Black-backed jackal, though. And now I have an annual pass so I can justify the fairly lengthy day trip over there more often :-D

I think both gibbon enclosure indoor areas have been viewable at least since my first visit in 2012

When I went on hamerton’s news page a while ago and it stated that ‘the train should be up and running again tomorrow’ I just stopped and said “oh boy I just can’t wait to see the train again, hooray!” However, we all know that you can hear it before you see it...
‘Choo choo, all aboard the choo choo train!’
 
I have clearly been too distracted to see the indoor gibbon areas before - I love that I keep discovering new bits. The train was running on Monday...

Did you spot anything in the shed which is fenced off in the black pademelon enclosure?
 
Hmmm, now I am tempted to head back over there tomorrow... which would not be the wisest use of petrol seeing as I've already been there once this week, and have just come back from a trip to Exmoor Zoo as well... but very tempted...

Well it's not officially on show - I only saw it through some sheeting.

How would you compare Exmoor to Hamerton? I've been to both and always enjoy my time at either collection!

I couldn't agree more - It could be utilised so much more with a bigger herd, or even
other species.
 
I love both Hamerton and Exmoor, though would consider Hamerton my favourite (not least because it's a bit closer than Exmoor and is also flat!) They both have an interesting diversity of species which make them stand out from many other places. They both have big cats (tigers at Hamerton and leopards at Exmoor). Both seem to be in the process of improving and updating, both acquiring interesting new species. Hamerton feels more spacious than Exmoor, probably because Exmoor is tucked on the side of a hill.
